It's a natural stress relieving pathway. Ever notice how if you got smack in the head by someone or run into something, you get a sudden flash of anger and anxiety? That's supposed to prep you for physical activity ie flight or fight. In events in which you aren't particularly threatened by feel very angry, you probably have a natural tendency toward aggression. Punching things helps release this build up energy, helping you return to normal. At least that's my theory. Just make sure you hold it back long enough to make sure what you want to do isn't going to hurt yourself or anybody else.
