When I was in France in 2000 or 2001, LV stores limited all customers to >1< item per day. So, there'd be guys standing outside the stores asking passer-byers to go in and buy something for them. I've even heard of people running from one store to another, to bypass the 1-item rule. Funny what people will go through to be chic.

Funniest example of LV-spottage: Korean chick wearing an LV backpack at the top of Squaw (a ski resort in Northern California). Never thought I'd see someone wearing one while snowboarding. :)

So it's French...that explains alot

A Korean having LV, surely you jest.

Nope, LV is very popular with Oriental and Asian women. I see it all the time in So Cal. I think we have the second largest Korean population in the world outside of Korea.

I think your sarcasm meter needs to be adjusted. Koreans are notoriously known for having to have the very latest fads and trendy things. Most Asians don't like to be called Orientals as well

it's what is called 'brand consciousness'

it really doesn't matter the quality or the looks, as long as the 'brand' is famous, then it's good...
sad, really...

Honestly I could understand if it was something with long standing prominance...or something that has always been in vogue, Mercedes, Rolex, BMW...etc...

And generally I try to stay up on things, but honestly until a year ago or so I had never ever heard of LV...never seen them, never heard anyone so much as mention their name...yet all of a sudden it seems as if they are everywhere...

One of my buddies was in Korea and was looking for a fake LV cap when a GI came out of a store wearing an entire suit made out of the LV fabric. He said it was the funniest thing he ever saw.

I realize it's been manufactured for years but I first recall seeing it en masse during the late 80s down in S. Florida. Knockoffs were all the rage then just as they are now. I think part of its popularity is the sheer brazeness of having LV ALL over the place on their merchandise. I mean Polo, Tommy, Nautica and the like aren't nearly that bad. They might stamp their name a few times on whatever but it's not blanketing the entire product.

I think the percieved increase in popularity is almost solely due to the fakes floating around. 80% of the LV bags in NY are not only fake, but worn by people who clearly could not afford them. Those ugly, overpriced pieces of crap deserved to be bootlegged.
You konw you're throwing money in the toilet when somebody can make an almost perfectly identical item for a tiny fraction of the cost!

Oakleys.
I buy $15 glasses :D

the craftmanship of Oakleys >>> fakes

Ditto.

I love my Oakley frames and lenses.

I'd never buy an LV bag. Not even if I was seriously loaded as I'd have better things to buy. May get anther brand but not LV. Too rich for my blood and people just want stuff that is better then others or perceieved as. They can have their LV bags.

I'll take my 23" LCD instead. At least that has better use's then a bag. But people have different priorities.

The'd probably never pay $500 for a video card or bother to have fast ram and OC features in their computers though!

Louis Vuitton has been popular for longer than most of our parents have been alive. In fact, according to their website Louis first began making products in 1854 which is why they are celebrating their 150th anniversary. The first time I noticed Louis in the "mainstream" was when they filmed the movie Pretty Woman. ;)

Just because you have never heard of something doesn't mean it has not been around for a long time....

While I agree with some obscure items, such as breguet, IWC, Pelikan and other higher end brands of luxury goods...however what I was getting at was the sudden explosion of interest in LV...I can remember a few years back when I would never have seen any of their stuff, and now it is everywhere...from families in the airport with full luggage sets, to my barber at Supercuts who sports a LV purse...it isn't like Burberry that everyone knows is high quality yet only a few carry it, Coach is about as widespread as LV but alot less money so it is understandable...heck even Prada doesn't seem as prominant anymore...

IQ levels...some stars have it (normally the actors) and some stars don't (Anybody want to ring a tune which group of people this is?)

First off, I guarentee you the majority of the stuff you see is fake. Second, people (read: women) like it because it's expensive. It's like wearing your income on your sleeve.

And, yes, it is ugly, but very well made.

Status symbol. Who really needs a $600,000 car? It gets you to point A to point B, just the same as a $15,000 car does. Why do people buy them? Because they can.

I guess my question is just how well made is it? of all the items I have seen they don't appear to be any better than many other quality leather makers out there, Coach is a good example...the only appeal I could see with it is the obvious branding that is apparant everywhere as their logo is plastered all over every piece. Interestingly enough one of Coach's most popular lines was that which had their logo all over it, are people that heavily influenced by branding and visual symbols? personally I like nice things but those which are somewhat subdued, a small logo is ok in my book but once you go putting your name/logo all over things then it just gets silly.

Well, that's the trouble I guess. A small black or brown leather purse looks pretty much like any other small black or brown leather purse.

I don't think they are ugly but I do detest seeing all the fakes around. To me that's like buying a $15 Rolex off a street vendor in NY. That's super weak!!!

Is that a testament to its quality? How often can a guy tear up a wallet anyway? I've had the same Fossil wallet for at least 5-6 years, and I think I paid $25 for it.

I can see where this guy is comming from, I have had some cheap wallets last forever and others look like crap in under a month...quality is generally a crapshoot...whereas my coach wallet I have had for a while now and it still looks very good, not new, but not like it is going to fall apart like ever...it was like $75 which I thought was high, however I have had $30-$40 wallets that looked awful in under a week and were almost unusable in under a year, so I would rather spend $75 once than $30-40 every year, same thing with shaving cream...I can buy 7 or 8 cans for $3 each a year, or one bar of shaving soap for $14 and it will last me over a year and a half and be much nicer stuff...

With regards to the plainness of no labels, I see how some might not like certain things because of their lack of visable branding, but will people ever go back to prefering quality over visual flash?
