What is up with Louis Vuitton, when did this stuff become popular and why?

Just asking all of the fashion/trendy crowd why these items are so popular? honestly I had never heard of the brand until two years ago and at that point it was not that mainstream, now whenever I visit the airport I see more LV luggage and other accessories than I can shake a stick at ....and surprisingly enough I see many eurotrash looking guys with it along with their metrosexual outfits...

Just wondering when this came into vogue, about how expensive is this crap and why the sudden jump in popularity, or has it always been popular and I just never noticed?...

I know people love their name branding, and this stuff shamlessly plasters emblems all over their items, but is the stuff that good? or are people just that tacky.

I heard of it first a few days ago.

As with any fashion item it's merely something trendy for people to latch on to, so that they can feel superior to those who've not done so yet. Then, once everybody realizes how cool it is, the trend-setters will no longer feel special enough, and will find something else to embrace.
I know people love their name branding, and this stuff shamlessly plasters emblems all over their items, but is the stuff that good? or are people just that tacky.
Again, so that people can proudly display that they're on the bandwagon, no mistakes about it.

I personally detest clothes that advertise what they are. I find it fake and pathetic.

It's the trend right now, my fiancee has loved the stuff the past couple of years. I'm not gay or a metrosexual so I still stick with old fashioned clothing, like polo shirts, slacks, shorts, etc.

don't get me wrong I have nothing against classic nice stuff....but this just seems over the top...

Coach IMHO is very nice, priced high and has some "brandage" but isn't nearly as ostentatious as LV...I see women with handbags, guys with luggage and wallets...etc, $700 for a handbag isn't bad, but $300 for a wallet? I had a hard enough time dealing with $75 for a coach (thing has lasted forever though and still looks new) I mean hell you just put your money in there..why spend $300 to put money in it and it isn't like having a solid gold money clip or something....

Maybe if they were more conservative looking, and only had one logo, but I fail to see why people like garbage with logos all over it? is this just an extension of those who left the tags on their high dollar sneakers from days of old? just seems tacky.

sorry for the rant.

Well, you probably see so much of it because there are so many fakes out there. The trouble is the fakes are so good you really cannot tell the difference between them and the real thing.

My Mother-In-Law has a set of LV luggage she's had for 20 years. Then again she was able to pay cash for a house not too long ago so it's not like she doesn't have the money. I think she got her moneys worth out of those bags. Their luggage is very expensive. Probably cost you $5gs for a complete set.

My wife has two LV purses, one her Mom bought her in France and the other one my wife bought for herself. She also has one fake.

I think the percieved increase in popularity is almost solely due to the fakes floating around. 80% of the LV bags in NY are not only fake, but worn by people who clearly could not afford them. Those ugly, overpriced pieces of crap deserved to be bootlegged.

You konw you're throwing money in the toilet when somebody can make an almost perfectly identical item for a tiny fraction of the cost!

I don't mind paying more than normal for something of exceptional quality, but I simply don't see the value in the LV bags. A friend of mine bought a purse, a checkbook holder, etc. for well over $1000. Absurd to me, but to each their own.

You keep reiterating the reason they buy them. They want people to think that they can spend 1000 dollars on a wallet and a hand bag like it's nothing. They want people to think they're rich, when in reality they still haven't paid off the credit card they bought the things with.

Well then they aren't identical, but with a $50 knockoff vs. an $800 handbag, who cares? It's not like you'll be taking the thing in the field and actually requiring the slightly better threading of the real thing.

it's ugly, but the quality is good supposedly. And people like to showoff their expensive stuff...

It's so common (and so are rip-offs) that it's not that special anyway. You see someone with it around here and you wonder if it's even real. My fiancee's Coach bag is real... I watched her spend her Christmas bonus on it. I asked her - ya know what I could buy with that money ?! :D She also commented how people will think it's fake anyway, but she wanted it.

My wife picked up the purse she bought at a second hand store in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. She paid about $350 cash for it. I believe the bag goes for around $700 new. She knows the owner of the store so she got a really good deal on it. It's a nice bag but I don't think it's worth $700.

The material used for real LV bags is pretty strong. Legend says that it was originally used for the subway trains in France. Yeah, kinda weird when you think of it... luggage made from the same stuff on Metro buses. :) Anyways, LV's been popular for a >looonnnggg< time. When I was in France in 2000 or 2001, LV stores limited all customers to >1< item per day. So, there'd be guys standing outside the stores asking passer-byers to go in and buy something for them. I've even heard of people running from one store to another, to bypass the 1-item rule. Funny what people will go through to be chic.

Funniest example of LV-spottage: Korean chick wearing an LV backpack at the top of Squaw (a ski resort in Northern California). Never thought I'd see someone wearing one while snowboarding. :)

Nope, LV is very popular with Oriental and Asian women. I see it all the time in So Cal. I think we have the second largest Korean population in the world outside of Korea.

Louis Vuitton has been popular for longer than most of our parents have been alive. In fact, according to their website Louis first began making products in 1854 which is why they are celebrating their 150th anniversary. The first time I noticed Louis in the "mainstream" was when they filmed the movie Pretty Woman. ;)

Beats the crap out of me. My Korean girlfriend once told me that she was not oriental or asian (can't remember which-doesn't matter much to me). There is a difference to them apparently.
