What is up with caucasian people having blonde hair as a kid and brown hair as adults?

I was looking at old pictures of my wife as a child and she had blonde hair. She is now a brunette. I remember a lot of my old friends had blond hair as a kid that later turned brown. What causes blonde hair to change to brown as a person gets older?

Didn't wash it enough?

OK, ok, that was a terrible joke but all I can contribute to this thread.

I'm in that category. Very light blond hair as a kid, now it's a dark brown. Don't know why.

I had dirty blonde hair when I was young, now it's dark brown. No idea why. Lots of people are like that...

I'm one of those kids. Hair was very blonde when I was little now it's a medium brown. I am glad it didn't stay blonde, actually.

It's because a lot of people are stupid when they're kids.

They get older, they get smarter and the hair color changes appropriately. ;)

(my theory at any rate!)

My dad and my brother had light light blond hair (almost white!) as as very young children. Dad's hair turned black by the time he was an adult, brother's hair turned out to be brown. Mine was a little lighter blonde when I was younger. My son's hair at 8 is dark blond/light brown, he was blond as a baby/toddler. Don't know how dark his will get, my spouse has darker brown hair (what's left of it, anyway, hehehe.)

I am the same as most posters on this board. Yes, I believe short hair and lots of time in the sun had something to do with it, but there was a noticable color change otherwise. I was a pure blonde from age 3-7 or so...

the same thing happened to my wife, although, she started out as a dirty blonde, now her hair is very dark.

hair is sort of a mystery. if we understood it there would be no bald men. hair follicles are an organ, and they have stem cells. as we age the pigment changes, could be your genes, could be the effects of increased DHT as we progress into puberty and into adulthood, or combinations of both -- or something else totally different

I was blond as a kid, but changed to brown in my pre-teen years and it got darker every year until it was dark brown.

I'm trying to find something on why this happens... it could be that it's not well know why this happens, at least that's what this paper indicates...
