What is too high for E8400

I am water cooled with a modified Coolit Freezone and getting great temps...

At stock 3ghz with 1.12v I hit 19c idle and 34c load (realtemp is lower by 2c then coretemp or pcalert (those 2 agree on my board)

Realtemp wont read anything lower then 26c ever....


At 9x400 3.6ghz I found the lowest vcore I could use was 1.2625v set in bios for 1.24v in windows and 1.22v under load. Little vdroop with this new generation Neo2 P35 board.

My temps are 22-23c idle (26c ambient temp)...Load under prime95 is 41c with realtemp only showing 39c and coretemp and pcalert showing 41c....



At 9x422 3.8ghz I appear to be stable at 1.35v set in bios for 1.31 under load. Load temps are at 46c.


I have tried to hit 4ghz and so far in rough testing and I haven't tried some newer bioses and messing with different combinations of vdimm, nb, jumper settings, and or memory timings but I can get it 2-3 hours stable in small FFT at 1.425v set in bios for 1.39v under load. First time I see load temps above 50c to about 51-52c. My idels temps at this vcore are 26c or about ambient room temp.




So where is the danger zone?

danger zone? most people won't go over 1.4V for extensive periods of time so take a look into tweaking the other voltages so you can bring the CPU voltage down.
take a look at Serradifalco's thread about tweaking his e7200 to 4ghz on 1.325V in bios. He lists the other voltages he used so if you are lazy to read up on things, his settings would be a good starting point.
Oh and if you are talking about temperatures, TJunction's like 95C but <70C (preferably <60C) is recommended.

Yeah I read it....

Not much of a comparison since he s using a 9.5 mulit....HIs actual fsb boost and chipset voltage boost is where I am already at and past.

I need 444-445 fsb so it s a bit harder.

I raised up my nb chipset a notch and now I am doing a bit better.

I also hampered myself with pc2-6400 stuff...though I got some cas 4 1.9v stuff so I felt I had some headroom with cas5-6 and up to 2.3v. I should not be limited by ram at least up to 450fsb...


I will live with anything unser 1.4v actual for 4ghz based on my seacrhing the net for ppls opinions on max vcore to give e8xxx series. My temps are a bit lower then most people.

I flashed it too 1.92b and 1.96b and I dont get any better fsb at certain vcores...I still need to play a bit with the VTT voltage and NB chipset voltage.

Well, you say:
3.8 GHz needs 1.31v load
4 GHz needs 1.39v load

Seems to me you're reaching the end of the line for that chip, as needing 0.8v for another 200 MHz is a lot.

VTT helped me the most in trying to hit 4GHz with an E8400. I have my VTT set to 1.3125V in the bios but it ends up at 1.22V according to Abit EQ. At stock VTT I could hardly get my chip stable at 3.7GHz@1.35V (load). It's now Prime stable at 3.98GHz@1.35V (load). I also raised my MCH up to 1.33V. Hope that helps Duvie.

I defintely agree I am close to the end....if ofcourse I understand what should be the reasonable safe limit to proceed...

Water cooled and 1.4v actually safe?

Does anyone know what VTT translates to?


Biggest thing I noticed was crossing the 425 I needed a boost in NB vcore....

I pass most memtest test so I think my relaxed timings are isolating my cpu at this moment

It stands for Ventral Trigeminothalamic Tract. Of course, it also means the termination voltage to the data lines between the CPU and the northbridge.

It may go to the point where someone once told me dont exceed the VTT from the vcore and they should be close or similar

I amy try to run my back done a bit once I found stability at the speed I wnt to run at tghe tmep I want and at the vcore I want.

I am closing on 24 hours F@H stability test (after it past 3 hours blend and small FFT) at 3.85ghz before I take it up a few more notches.
