What is this?

Distributed Computing 😀

OK picture the scene - you have a massive amount of Data to process - were talking something that could take a fast desktop machine a couple of decades (or more) to process. What is the solution? Lets look at the SETI at Home project - and get an idea of what is involved at this page.

Distributed Computing is the involvement of many computers to process data for a central project, with the intention to be able to process the data faster, look at it more closely etc - anything you could do with more computer power.

Distributed Computing, as Migroo said 🙂P), but here is a little more of an explanation:

Distibuted Computing is basically the process of taking a huge job, breaking it up into little chunks, and sending those chunks out to computers on the Internet (in our case, anyway) and those computers do the work, then send the results back.

There are many DC projects:

SETI@Home
RC5/OGR
Distributed Folding
Folding@Home
UD
ECCP
Genome@home

I know I have forgot some, there are too many to remember.


We all do our particular project for different reasons. I have done RC5, SETI@home (my main project), ECCP (another current project) Folding@Home (that makes 3 current projects!) I personally like stats, as most people here do. We also try to help each other out with any computer problems. They are all related to DC...... so are power problems, heat problems, air conditioning problems, wife problems....the list goes on and on.... You will find some of the best computer anywhere in this DC forum.


We would love to have to on the TeAm running any of the projects, just find one that interests you...

IJump and Migroo told you about "distributed computing" but you asked about this Forum.

This forum is mostly about our various TeamAnandTech efforts in various Distributed Computing projects. We tell good stories, we tell bad stories, we fix each others computer problems, we go "Yay" when something good happens to one of us and we go "Aw, sh*t" when something bad happens.

The final comment - if you are remotely interested in Distributed Computing and want to participate with hundreds of eager support people, this is the place. If you can't pick a project, we'll help. If you can't get it running, we'll help. You won't see many "flaming posts" here; you won't see any big conflicts with the MODS; you'll just get support.

So, are you in??????
