So I was just outside, you know, taking out the trash, and my dog was outside with me, so I figured I might as well play with him in the backyard (play, meaning "watch him browse around"). Suddenly, for no apparent reason, he tears off across the yard (probably like 200 feet or so) and starts nuzzling around in the grass. I watch him a bit, and figure he might be looking for some leftover rainwater, and make a note to fill up his water bowl, but then he grabs a clump of grass and runs 100 feet to the middle of the backyard, and starts shaking the clump and tearing it apart and such. By now I'm like "ah, great, he's got something dead", and so I walk over and wait for him to spit most of the stuff out and pull him away, and I find that he's got some sort of animal fetus. It's sort of weird, and I have no idea what it is. Any ideas?

Sorry about the out-of-focus shot, but I wasn't too concerned with the focus when I shot it.

This is my dog.

No, it's definitely a mammal baby. Maybe stillborn? Whatever it is, I'm not letting my dog anywhere near my face.

More than likely your dog stumbled on an animal giving birth, and he snatched one of the newborn babies.

That's what it looks like to me.

Looks like a chipmunk.

How could you let your dog do that ? I watch mine everywhere he goes... I see him start sniffing something I pull him away immediately so I can at least see what it is first. That's nasty.

No wonder! You have a beagle. The one we used to have would find a lot of stuff. They have an incredible sense of smell.
