What is this Vista HCP..Whatever its called for LCD monitors?

id like to buy the 24" dell when it drops in price, but im worried about it not being compatible with Vista to some degree. What exactly are these new monitors being designed to do?

It's HDCP, which stands for High Definition Content Protection.

Microsoft is SAYING that to play movies and things in high resoltuon, you will need it, to protect the content owner's rights.

There is no way it will be in the shipping product.

Additionally, before a bunch of MS bashers come in about Vista this will occur on Apple and probably Linux variants as well. HDCP is not a MS only issue. I think you will hear a lot of screaming when people try to play HD stuff on their new computers and old (millions mind you) monitors and nothing appears but a laughing MIAA and RIAA representative on the screen.

It's for any type of monitor and you must buy a new one if you intend to play WMV DRM on Vista and I think HD-DVD/BluRay as well. Essentially it's the MPAA's newest form of 'protection' that's already been hacked (using a small device) from what I've read. You can still play DivX 6 Home Theater/XviD among others and not need HDCP!

Like what content? There is virtually no protected content currently that can be used on a PC.

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it shows up in the product just after the last beta.

Its bad, but not quite as bad as its made out to be... you'll still be able to watch HD-DVD (& protected HDTV) on your moniter even if its not HDCP compatible, BUT you'll be limited to 480p settings which will defeat the purpose of the whole thing. To me its a deal-breaker for Vista even though I don't really care about watching DVD's or HDTV on my PC (& my Sony HDTV is compatible) but if I was buying a new high-end moniter right now I'd make damn sure it WAS compatible before I laid my money down... odds are HDCP WILL be included in the shipping version of Vista, so if you plan on running it, invest wisely.
