id like to buy the 24" dell when it drops in price, but im worried about it not being compatible with Vista to some degree. What exactly are these new monitors being designed to do?

million of people who upgrade would suddenly be unable to play all sorts of content.

It's HDCP, which stands for High Definition Content Protection.
Microsoft is SAYING that to play movies and things in high resoltuon, you will need it, to protect the content owner's rights.
There is no way it will be in the shipping product.

Its bad, but not quite as bad as its made out to be... you'll still be able to watch HD-DVD (& protected HDTV) on your moniter even if its not HDCP compatible, BUT you'll be limited to 480p settings which will defeat the purpose of the whole thing.

Additionally, before a bunch of MS bashers come in about Vista this will occur on Apple and probably Linux variants as well. HDCP is not a MS only issue. I think you will hear a lot of screaming when people try to play HD stuff on their new computers and old (millions mind you) monitors and nothing appears but a laughing MIAA and RIAA representative on the screen.
