I'm of the school of thought that we are not intelligent enough to come close to understanding the universe in its entirety. Why it exists, what it is, etc.

If we think of intelligence as a spectrum, from single cell organisms to whatever else, believing we are on the highest end of that scale is on par with believing the world is flat and the center of the universe. We're likely relatively stupid.

An ant in a box doesn't know what cardboard is or why he can't walk through it.

Maybe we can hope to build some manner of AI that will eventually be able to do it. Or at least build the AI that will. :)

Why is it sad? I understand that there is so much more out there, but it's out of my reach. Why should I care about things that are so far out of reach? All I can do is live.

this is science for you, it will take years to see anything.

heck, the Bose-Einstein condensate took almost 60 years just to be confirmed, and we have yet to see a good use for it :colbert:
