What is this Unicode that Trillian doesn't support?

Unicode is basically the 16-bit version of ASCII. Instead of having 255 characters or different code pages, you can have up to 64k chars..

Does that mean the person sending me IMs is using certain characters not in standard ASCII? I wonder what they could be sending me?
