Some steampunk stuff is kinda neat. But (maybe i'm too utilitarian) a lot of it is all show and no function. Both is way better. Some of it is just god awful.

I always liked the diesel/atompunk idea better. Current day or near future that never progressed past 1940/50's tech and style, degenerated into at least a partial dystopia. At least that's my image of it... seems almost feasible, if we didn't have a few key inventions (transistor for example).

I don't normally watch anime, but I was turned on to Last Exile through it's gorgeous steampunk art. Truth be told it wasn't all that as a story either, but it has some really nice eye candy. The red vanship has to be one of my all-time fave vehicles.
