What is this "rate limit" on ICQ?

Mrs. Skoorb can't connect on ICQ. It says she hit the rate limit? What is this nonsense? I quickly checked icq.com but all that served to do was confirm my long-time belief that no page on the internet is quite as useless as icq.com

So a person can only send a certain amount of messages I suppose? Is ICQ trying to make it that easy on the competition?

ICQ really is a horrible program. While I don't get that error, I do get "out of memory" errors.

when icq tries to connect to the servers or whatever and exceeds its attempt limit, you gotta leave it for a while b4 trying again kinda like ftps, can't hammer a busy server. i've never had that rate limit exceeded for a long time though and i'm on 24/7, maybe your net ocnnect is screwy.

what are you running, win95 with 16mb ram? i've never gotten that error. try downloading the newest version. aim takes more memory according to windows.

You're blaming you being low on memory or running a POS operating system on ICQ? How lame. I don't get this with any version of ICQ, and I happen to use Miranda, which is about 300KB to download. Definitely not bloated.

I agree, though, the new rate limit crap is total BS. Stupid AOL.

Frogdog is using win2k, but there are far more other reasons to call ICQ crappy, namely it's emoticons suck and it's a 400 meg download!

He's using Win2K and he gets out of memory errors? That's messed up. I've never once gotten one of those using Win2K Pro or Advanced Server, and I only have 256MB PC133 ram.

Try out Miranda ICQ if you think regular AOL ICQ is too bloated (which it's not.. it's about 3 or 4MB download, and only takes one or two seconds to load).

What are some of these other reasons? Crappy emoticons? GOOD. I don't like emoticons. They suck. MSN has some good ones, but I'd rather have none. MSN is too crappy overall to use. AIM doesn't hold a candle to ICQ IMO.

At least ICQ gives you the functionality to disable anything..

Yes, you're both right, I am running windows 95 although I don't have 16mb of ram, I only have 8mb. How stupid I was to blame the program when it's obviously just my crappy system. I had no idea how much memory was available when I got these errors either. And is there a later version of ICQ out that 99a? That's the one I have. I really shouldn't post when I have no idea what I'm talking about should I? Thank you both for showing me the light.

ofcourse ICQ is ruined. Mirabilis already had contract at 98 and we were just waiting for it to be ruined as year 2000 hits when AOL takes over Mirabilis.

Well IMO overall 99b was the best version until 2001b came out. 2001b is actually pretty decent, since it doesn't hog all your memory, it stores your contact list online, etc. Much better text features as well and it includes all the AIM smileys. I prefer to keep all that garbage disabled or use Miranda ICQ. More useful features and no bloated stupid features.

99b is still the best. I'd still use it if I can. Unfortunately it refuse to connect often time and whenever I get off-line message, it no longer clears it from the server and old message appears over and over again.

Well I'm glad he spilled it out, cause I wouldn't want to have wasted my time flaming you for using Win95.

Jerboy, I don't think 99b is the best now that 2001b is out, since there are too many advantages. And it's not like 2000b where it would take long to load. 2001b is lighter, and it's better in almost every way. After you disable the sounds, customize the messaging to be like 2000b and prior, then it's good. Also you can choose more colours for your text which is nice, which you can not do in 99b.

They're still all too bloated and I'll stick with Miranda.

yup, i notice that i have less problems with newer versions using 2001b build #3659 right now it has never crashed. well not much crashes on win2k

after 3 days uptime and using icq plus skin .. task manager says icq is using 11.5MB not too bad. i have 512mb anyways aim ussually sucks up 13MB atleast and i only have like 3 contacts on that.

seriously, what competition? >>

MSN and Yahoo! to name a couple. Yahoo is what everyone at work uses as the official messenger, and I personally pick MSN as my favorite along with most of the people I regularly chat with. Most of my original IM buddies or people that I add nowadays pick a messenger other than ICQ.

Oh well, it works now! I generally use MSN but I have some people on ICQ that don't so I am forced to use it. To be honest, I don't really mind the program at all. I have the 2001b and it seems to be a little better than previous ones, except for this incident tonight of course!
