What is this instrument

I went to a solo flute concert, and this woman played some weird instrument before picking up the flute. It was j-shaped (like a cane) and made of metal like the flute. The mouthpiece was located on the flute where the part of wood is parallel to the main shaft and near the "hook." Anyone know? I need to know for my class.

sounds and looks much more like a flute and the hook is a lot shorter on this instrument

it doesn't have the big lip at the end found on a lot of brass instruments. it's a hole on the end like a flute

i did that intentionally because:
