No, it's an asian "food", in Mandarin it's "dsong4 dse3" (sorry, I never know how to phoneticize things). I don't have the answer though, so I'm quite curious if anyone knows :p

I would actually guess that it's called "sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves"

Zhong Zi is the han yu. I guess there's no short english translation besides the literal one.

Just curious, do white people eat this stuff?

These things? The ones in the pics are a little misshapen, but they have the basic shape.

WTF zongzi!??

I'll stick to calling it "sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves"

Same here. I always seem to get the right item when I call it that, so I'll just stick with it.

Speaking as a white person I can say yes I do eat this stuff.

Fobot: no you do not eat the leaf, unless you want a very unpleaseant experience on the way in and out. ;)

I like the version with red cooked pork the best but the ones with chinese sausage, shitake mushrooms, and dried shrimp aren't bad either.

I'm white, and those are one of my favourite foods. I was taught how to make them by my wife's grandmother, but it is a lot of work so we usually just buy them from the local chinese grocery store. They are called jung in the chinese dialect that my G-i-L spoke.

Zong zi is typically wrapped in bamboo leaves (I make about 60 every year), although a version using banana leaves is often used in dim sum. Also, zong zi typically do not have a triangular shape, but they have 4 points (imagine a twisted rectangular pouch). Rice wrapped in banana leaves can be found in many cultures, not just Chinese, namely Caribbean cuisine. The fillings and type of rice vary depending on the recipe and culture. Zong zi is filled with sticky, glutinous rice and either soy sauce, fatty pork, and sometimes mushrooms (eastern Chinese style) or salted egg, pork sausage, pork, dried shrimp, chestnuts, and more (southern Chinese style).
