What is this extra 50 cents charge on netflix?

I just signed up for the $9.99/month Netflix plan and they billed me $11.49. Tax in my area is ~10% so it seems the price they charged me is 50 cents over what I was expecting. The "receipt" (if you can call it that) they sent me just says "Plan Price: $9.99 a month". Any idea what this extra 50 cent charge is for?

10% sales tax? Are you are out of Chicago?

Jumpem asked a good question as well.

Either way, isn't there a way to see an itemized receipt on your account online? It should break down how much went to each tax and such.... That or just call the billing debt and they can either explain it or refund you the difference.

$11.49 - $9.99 = $1.50

Why do you say "50 cents?"

[edit]

OK. You would get charged $1 tax anyway. Got it.

Just found the invoice on the Netflix website and I was not even billed for tax so it actually would be a $1.50 difference now.

Has your payment actually posted to your account yet, or do you have a $1 authorization and then a $10.50 charge pending?

Or maybe, since you just signed up, it's a prorated portion of your first month. If you started on June 30, but their bill date is July 4th, they'll charge you for that partial month.

I don't think that's how it works. If you sign up June 26th your monthly fee allows you to stream until July 26th. Besides, I signed up early July so if they prorated it would be close to $10 before any taxes anyway.

Several years back I heard from people talking about how much Netflix is an asshat in how difficult they make it to cancel. I never used their service as I didn't need the experience. I guess maybe this might be another aspect of hatness.

I think you're confused. Netflix has never been difficult to cancel.

Just log-in to Netflix.com and suspend your account. Simple as that.

You can even cancel while you still have credit from gift cards and such. The credit will still be there when you go to re-activate.

That said, my account is grandfathered to have an extra simultaneous stream. I would have to pay more for that if I let my subscription lapse. Nice little perk, I guess.

Which one is this? I thought I was the last set of accounts to have a grandfathered account and that ended this month.

We have an account that was grandfathered under the lower price. Recently received an e-mail stating price was going up, also saw a notice when I fired up Netflix last night.

Same here. Still an excellent price IMO.

I haven't checked in months. Maybe it's gone. I don't know...

It wouldn't be just gone. The default is actually to stay in the same level of service but pay more money, or you can choose to drop down to the lower level of service and pay the same. They send you several emails reminding about the change in the last month, and whenever you go to netflix.com on a browser it pops up a warning as well.

Yup that's what happened to my account as well.

The last time I had a subscription was in 2011, I had noticed the charge on my visa, and canceled it the next day, I was unable to watch Netflix for the remainder of the month I had payed for. This was Canadian netflix, I would hope they haven't continued this policy.
