I have my hd partitioned into c and d, with xp in drive c and win2k in d;

i started my computer this morning and when i tried to load up winxp i got this
error:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer;
if this is thei first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer; If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check for viruses on your computer.
remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.
Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

When i tried to start from win 2k
the same msg, except
inaccesible_boot_device was added at the top of the screen;

then i put a startup disk and once in the dos mode, i couldn't access my
drive c;
i could access drive d, but it wouldn't let me go to drive c;

I have no clue why i got this blue screen since i havent istalled anything on the pc, and i have i have only been checking yahoo's mail as my dsl connection is down...
also, any clues on how to retrieve some files from the drive c? i was able to get the ones in d, but not c...
txs

Sounds like a problem with your storage.

Could be an out of place connector (IDE/scsi or terminator/power), problem with the HD, bad IDE controller on the motherboard or it could be that you changed the HD geometry from the initial settings when the OS's were installed. IF you re-AUTO detect HD's when you intially set them different manually (cyclinder, heads, sectors), you can have HD geometry problems, but I don't know if that would produce the error you experienced.

IF you got a certain type of virus it can affect the MBR (master boot record) on the HD which would affect both OS's on the same drive but different partitions.

Can you access WinXP in SAFE MODE?
If so, try looking at the Event viewer to get some clue as to what caused the problem.

Do you have a CDROM drive setup as the first boot device in the BIOS?
Try changing the boot order to the floppy first, HD, then CDRom.

The possiblities are endless with this error.
NTLDR corrupt, NTDetect corrupt,Pagefile corrupt, corrupted HD....

yeah, i tried safe mode for both os's and it was going but after a bit, went right to the blue screen; then i tried to boot up with win2k and winxp cds and i tried to fix drives and it would start and it would say something like, invalid drive.....i think somehow the mbr got messed up; or the c drive...dont know how i got a virus, if i got one, cause i have only been using this pc to read news or check yahoo mail and havent downloaded any files....also i got norton av and and some anti trojan software...oh well...

I got this screen a bunch of times last week when trying to add a zip drive. Have you moved/changed anything around recently? I'd check your cables and make sure all your connections are 100%.

guess, i'll try that...perhaps something came lose, but havent installed anything recently!

well, tried that....same thing....
went ahead and did a low level formatting, and after fdisking, i formatted partition c, but when i was formatting d, is stopped at 20% and it just froze there; so i restarted computer, and when it checked for ide drives, it didnt detect anything; so i put the boot up floppy disk, and type fdisk and it said, no drives detected or something to that effect; so i got the fitness test floppy ran that, and it ran ok; came back did the format to partioned d, and it went ok; attempted to install win2k, but after it shut off the first time , it came back and gave that blue screen error again..i think the drive is dead it seems..is an ibm gxp60 40 gig, one year old exact...not even my generic 4 yr old drive died like that..time for a new hd i guess...
