So which of the conglomerates owns the name and wants to run them into the ground "for the sake of nostalgia"?

It's like some evil demon is bringing my dearly departed loved ones back to life just so I can watch them get raped on the living room rug.

If that is not a epic list of awesum games to have to your credit I dont know what is.

We *need* a Baldurs Gate III game...... please saaave us Black Isle!
(we re drowning in a ton of crappy action RPGs! First person shooter-RPGs, only you can save us)

***** ps History lesson:

In 1998, several key members responsible for Fallout, left Interplay to form Troika Games after they "were unable to come to an agreement with Interplay as to how [their] next team should be structured"

games made by "Troika Games":
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
The Temple of Elemental Evil
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

On December 8, 2003, in the midst of serious financial difficulties, Interplay laid off the entire Black Isle Studios staff. By then, most members had moved on to found a new company called Obsidian Entertainment (2003–present).

Games made by Obsidian Entertainment:
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords
Neverwinter Nights 2
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir
Alpha Protocol
Fallout: New Vegas
Dungeon Siege III

If the guys behinde Black Isle studios needed financing for a new Baldurs Gate III,
Im 1000% sure a kick starter project would do the trick.

--------------------------------- Google'd it:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-22-interplay-appears-to-be-resurrecting-black-isle-studios
Update: Former Black Isle lead designer Chris Avellone has given Eurogamer his take on the news.
"Doesn't involve Obsidian at all," he told us. "No idea what it's about. I wasn't aware anything beyond the name was left at Interplay."

Original story: Interplay appears to be resurrecting Black Isle Studios, the famed role-playing developer responsible for Fallout, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale.
The evidence, so far, is a website, Twitter account and Facebook page.
The website reads: "Our goal has always been to make the world's best RPGs. Black Isle Studios is back."

The website is registered to Interplay and Herve Caen. I tried phoning the Interplay office in Los Angeles but there was no answer - it's still early there.

There are no tweets from the Black Isle Twitter account.

The Black Isle Facebook page was created on 13th August. It's cover photo was updated yesterday.

Black Isle's return is news to Interplay founder Brian Fargo:

"I just read that Interplay is bringing back Black Isle. Hmmm... Not enough info for me to comment," he tweeted.
Most, if not all, of the people responsible for the games Black Isle became famous for have moved on.

Black Isle founder Feargus Urquhart went on to found Obsidian Entertainment,
and took many old Black Isle staff with him - Chris Avellone included.

Looks like its just the "name" of company without any of the orginal guys that worked there.
Thats a little disappointing to be honest.... still heres hopeing they atleast stick with their roots and try putting out a decent turn-based RPG.

Yeah, they are back in name only.
Until they hire back all the people that left before, then this isn't anything special.

Pretty amazing list. Games from that list probably comprise 5 of my top 10 best games ever list.

Pretty much this. Until and unless the actual talent behind the games gets hired back (unlikely), it is going to be another corporate grab at the name and reputation. In other words, 'It's a trap!'

A Baldur's Gate game would require Wizards of the Coast support and rights from whoever owns the rights to the games before they could kickstarter it.

That would, of course, take money, which they wouldn't have unless they kickstarter-ed it....

Chicken and the egg scenario.

You also have these guys at http://baldursgate.com/ stating that they plan on creating a BG3 if the enhanced editions of bg1 & bg2 sell well enough. I'm guessing if Black Isle is going to do anything it will either be Planescape Torment or something completely new.

I wonder if gaming is coming full circle now. It's like the early 90's are coming back. With devs spending ridiculous amounts of money on graphics and voice overs with less focus on gameplay they might be realizing that a market has been left untapped for a long while and perhaps is ready for a return.

I for one am ready for a brand new state of the art top down isometric view game engine from 2012 with all the love and polish of the old ones with some awesome story and characters.

One can only hope, the boom in gaming amongst the casual crowd has caused almost every developer to move towards more casual based games, dumbing down the gameplay in order to appeal to the mass market.

I kind of hope that this is a bubble, that this console generation has burnt themselves out on the constant call of duty rehashes and that developers can define their product above other games by actually bringing back some of the decent story and depth.

We've seen kickstarter fire up old projects for games long lost, it's a great thing to support because it's proving the viability of these sorts of games in a relative risk free manner.
