What is this and why is it funny?

It's a joke. Read the title on the first page more carefully.

Most of the specs are BS, or bad puns. The charts on the second page are kind of silly.

I don't get it, I think I'm in over my head. :( Maybe I should stick to off-topic.

Though, I did notice the footnotes.

What exactly would you do with a write-only memory chip?

I sorta suspected that would be a problem to begin with. I'm sure there's more that I don't get.

Write only -- as in not allowed to read.

Think in terms of a CDs.
CD-Rom -- Read only
CD-R/w -- Read and write.

How much would you pay for a CD that you could write to, but were not allowed to read from?

As a side note, this was actually included in a company's databook back in the 70's by a bunch of comedian engineers. The people compiling the book were not technical, and did not "get it." The company no longer exists.

Awww maaaan ... we've had that as an april fools joke in an EE paper, about 1982-ish. That was a DIY project, complete with PCB layout and everything - a "WOM" Write Only Memory, perfect for backups :D

It basically was an address decoder, an OR over the data lines, and a large capacitor. Everything looked perfectly scientific, at least as long as you managed to not see the bleeding obvious uselessness of the assembly ...

[edit: syntax]

Heh. Would've been kinda funny had I read it after slogging thru tons of datasheets during my final year of Comp Eng. It's just plain silly now.

It's for people who really want to secure their data. :p

Proper hardware implementation of /dev/null, so that Linux can stop wasting processor time emulating one?

;)

"The 25120 is easily cooled by employment of a six-foot fan, 1/2" from the package. If device fails, you have exceeded the ratings. In such cases, more air is recommended"
