Was the previous owner deaf? It looks like a device I've seen that flashes the lights when someone calls.

Probably those speakers/microphone found in old phones.

It was behind a jack in the wall... So, im not sure how that would help some one determine that they were getting a call...

It looks familiar. I recall something like that you could stick on the back of the phone for recording it and it would pick up off the magnetic coil in the speaker but that wouldn't make sense where it is.

Its a cat toy. You connect it to your testicles, then dance around. The previous owners cat must have got ahold of it and hid it from the owner. Some cats don't like it.

Looks like a load coil and resistor. It compensates for something or other in the copper lines.

Try taking it with a camera that was made after year 2000, it might be easier to tell. :p It looks like something electrical but that's all I get from it. Is that black thing a battery?

The black thing isnt a battery... it gives a low orange glow when voltage applied...

I really don't think that is for a phone at all.

Those connectors are way too big to connect to anything phone wiring related. The top part looks like it should hook onto something, but what? Can you get a clearer picture of the top part and any markings on the middle part?

Maybe its some type of resistor or maybe a piece of test equipment from way back when?

The FBI will be by to re-install their listening device when you're gone.
