What is there to do in Louisiana?

My first trip to NOLA I had just returned from Afghanistan and found the bars to be full of drunk LSU girls all screaming "BABY BABY BAAAABY!" I asked someone what was going on, and they said it was Bieber fever. The world I left, it wasn't the same as the one I came back to. D:

that actually made me laugh. 🙂

I don't know when you are coming, but June is a slow season for things to do in LA.

This Saturday there is a concert in a vineyard about an hour north of New Orleans. They have this "Jazz'n the Vines" a few times a year. It is 6:30-9, $10/person, and kids under 17 are free. It is at Pontchartrain Vineyards.

In New Orleans, the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium are highly regarded, but really cannot both be seen in one day. With the heat, I'd recommend the Aquarium. A good day would be to go to the Aquarium, then eat lunch in the French Quarter, and maybe do some sightseeing around the area like the French Market, Cafe du Monde. I recommend Pierre Maspero's for lunch. If you want to see more of the French Quarter and want to avoid Bourbon St. (like I do), Royal St. is one block over and is basically where most of the art galleries are.

At night, you could take them on a Haunted History Tour. I've met a few of these tourguides, and they know more about New Orleans history than anyone else I know. I

NOLA is great.

Find a cozy B&B on Magazine. Explore the Garden District. Forget Bourbon St! Visit the D-Day Museum. Do a Graveyard tour. Listen to some live music.

I was there for Jazz Fest a month ago, and we discovered this great outdoor wine bar with music. Check it out!

You can also find a crayfish boil or even go visit Avery Island.

Yeah, they might be dirt poor down there in some places, but at least they are relaxed and love life.

I ended up going down to New Orleans a few weeks ago. We got a nice hotel in between the French Quarter and the Garden district, so we were able to walk everywhere.

You all had me worried about the heat, but it was fine. It was 90-95 and pretty humid, which I found much more bearable than Austin's 105+ and mild humidity.

Having the two 16 year olds with us was absolutely no problem during the day. It was a bit tricky to find things to do at night. The locals told us about some bars with live music that wouldn't card so we went to a couple of those. There were also some coffee shops and stuff open late. If there girls weren't with us, we probably would have done more barhopping, so it was only a minor setback.

And I was surprised by how much Katrina damage is still left. You see it everywhere you go. Houses that are falling down, piles of rubble, hastily repaired buildings, etc.

Thinking about driving to Louisiana (from Austin) for a handful of days. Going with a couple of friends. I'll probably invite my 16 year old little sister and one of her friends so anything involving drinking or 18+ things are off limits.

I've thought about this for a whole of 5 minutes, so I haven't done much research yet. My destination will probably be New Orleans, but is there anything worth doing along the way?

If y'all's gonna be in Loozeeana, y'all can bang your sister...or marry her...it's like a state pastime...and if y'all gets a dee-vorce, y'all's still brother and sister!!

🙄

I was also shocked by this. In 2012, years after the hurricane, entire skyscrapers sit abandoned in the French Quarter. Huge sections of the city are basically uninhabitable. Even Nicholas Cage sold all his property there and left. 😀

Oh, and just to reiterate my opinion earlier in the thread, that Louisiana is one of the worst states in the country.

You're thinking of Mississippi and Alabama.

Like there's any difference...:colbert:

QFT. I pulled chicks out of louisiana places only to be almost gang raped by the dudes there. Fortunately a cop was off duty that night. I was going to be there a month.

I drove to Texas after that for nights out.

Go hang out with my brother, he lives in Lafayette. Oh and if you go visit him can you bring him a couple things he left at my apartment?

EDIT:
Ah you already went

Lafayette is probably the second best city in New Orleans. It has 2 streets of decent bars with all the college kids in them. A lot of hot girls from out of state because ULL is the only school they could get into (so they're dumb.) Also plenty of local girls in the bars (so they're really dumb, and chubby on their way to being fat from growing up on the Louisiana diet.) Recommend staying at the Hotel Juliet since it's right down the street from the bars, and it's the nicest hotel in town. There's two sushi places on the main strip there, one of them sucks, one of them is surprisingly good. I think the good one was Tsunami.

Baton Rouge sucks. It's a dirty, crime ridden place where even the popular hang out areas aren't immune from criminal violence. It has the best mall in Louisiana (nicer than the ones in New Orleans) but still no Nordstrom. I asked the cashier while checking out at the "Jean Therapy" store (which does have 7FAM, and True Religion) where I might find the Nordstrom, and she replied "What's a Nordstrom?" Tigerland is where the LSU crowd hangs out, and again there are tons of hot, dumb girls from out of state (most of the cheerleaders from my highschool went to LSU.) I worked at a concession stand for 4 games during football season and most of the older folks were nice, but most of the younger to middle aged people were rude, dumb and violent. One memorable encounter involved a drunk man wearing all purple and gold repeatedly accusing me of giving him incorrect change. I told him I knew how to do simple addition, and he sneered "then why are you working at a concession stand?" I would not go back to Baton Rouge. Even Louisiana natives will tell you it's become a very dangerous city post-Hurricane Katrina.

Why are you trashing ULL?

I'm sorry, I forgot that it's one of the best schools in the United States. Most MIT students didn't get into ULL, so they had to go with their safety school. With such distinguished alumni as Richard Simmons, it's easy to understand the competitiveness. 😀

I had no idea Richard Simmons went to ULL!

I'll take the licks but ULL does have a good computer science and engineering program. It ain't MIT but it has a good rep in the south for those programs.
