I'll be there for a week next month for work. Any must see places to check out?

My in-laws are from there, and whenever we go visit we spend a lot of time at the beaches -- but not Jax beach (usually Vilano). Might be a bit cool for that in November, so...

Castillo de San Marcos is in St Augustine and is worth checking out. There's also a lot of small shopping places in the old city part just across the yard from the fort. I remember it being quite touristy, but that was a few years ago.

There's lots of shopping and restaurants at the Jacksonville landing.

The treaty oak is really something to see. Absolutely HUGE sprawling oak tree. Sounds boring, but it's pretty amazing.

If you're into board games, CoolStuffInc has a store in Jacksonville.

Grab breakfast at the Metro Diner. They've added more locations since being on DDD, but in my experience the quality hasn't really suffered -- more locations just means shorter wait times. If you like sweet breakfasts, Yo Hala on the Square is probably my favorite sweet breakfast from anywhere.

The Jacksonville Zoo is pretty cool if that's your thing. I don't remember anything amazing about it, but I do remember thinking it was one of the better zoos I'd been to.

Ameila Island is nice; I've not been there in November but weather should still be good there.

TPC Sawgrass (the golf course with the "island" green) is just south of the city.

Go to orlando for a night or 2 and hit some amusement parks.

I've been to Orlando a hundred times. Love the amusement parks, but since I'm very limited on days, don't think I'll be going there this time.

Drive north or south.

My dad lives there....there really isn't a whole lot. Some breweries and restaurants down town...that are kinda sorta OK?

maybe check out a Jaguars game? probably free?

In all honesty I would get out of Jax and head south to St. Augustine (near the fort). It's out of the way, but it's an easy drive. Good restaurants, bars, live music, shopping, etc.

Yeah, St Aug's is a common destination, but also ultra touristy. Tolerance of that type of place is individual-dependent. It's not a bad visit, though.

Tons of great beaches and parks in that region, though.

Dad lives on a canal and so there's always a boat trip into the sound and trapping blue crabs out of the back yard for dinner, so that's nice. But not easily done for a visitor doing the hotel thing.

My GF's parents live in Jax (Mandarin). From my experience, downtown is mostly businessy with restaurants here and there. There's a few things like that science museum, friendship fountain, etc. but that's not too exciting, especially when you're alone. Since OP is alone on business, St. Augustine would be much easier to do alone than looking for things to do in the city. I guess that's just me though

Yah, go to old Saint Augustine (historic district) and the fort.

If you like fresh seafood you're going to be in a great place. Try Osteen's. Their fried shrimp and scallops are some of the best. Place looks like a dump - an old cinder block type building IIRC - but it's busy as heck so call ahead and do takeout.

There's an alligator farm down there you might wanna check out.

well, what else do you do when you live on a canal? walk outside in the morning, toss trap in water.

come back 10 hours later...dinner.

oh, manatees, too. but they aren't good for much more than looking at. :D

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions, any other cities within 1-2 hr drive worth checking out (besides Orlando)?

Savannah. There are great foodie choices, nice architecture, it has extensive history, and it's not as touristy as St Augustine.

...posting in a bigrash thread.

Be safe down there. Traffic on 95 can be a bit crazy in all that construction that's been going on the past decade.
