I'm trying to remove my Athlon HSF from the MB but I feel like I am crushing the chip. What is the trick to removing it? I'm using a flat headed screwdriver and pushing down and away on the clip but it seems pretty tight. Any more pressure and I feel like I'll crush the chip.

I think I remember reading somewhere that it can take 12-24 lbs of force to put on the clips.

Yeah DoggieDog, I always feel apprehensive when trying to remove the hs. Just apply enough to pop it off, but that's easier said than done hehe. I wouldn't worry about crushing the chip.

I'm worried because I have cracked one before. Chipped the corner of the cpu and ruined it. I am ultra apprehensive about it that's why I bought a pre-assembled MB/CPU combo last time around.

Okay, well don't do whatever cracked it again :)
Maybe you should consider investing in a screwdriverless heatsink, or one that utilizes the four mounting holes in the board around the socket.
