What slot is the standard for hooking up internal modems? Cause I am building a pc, and I want a modem on my computer. Which kind of modem should I buy?

Hardware-based. ISA Hardware-based are cheaper, but you can find a PCI version for a little more on the price tag.

ISA is less CPU-intensive. Otherwise, they both perform equally well under ideal line conditions.

Be sure to confirm that the motherboard you are using has the required slot - for example, if you buy an ISA modem, be sure the motherboard has an ISA slot (and that slot is not already filled)

Amd also that ISA slots are going to becoming increasingly harder to find on motherboards in the future. Is the modem fo use as a primary connection or a back up? If its back up, I'd just consider getting a cheap winmodem for the one or two times that you will need it in the life of that computer.

Modems come in ISA, PCI (most common), AMR and CNR the later two are kinda obscure and less used but i've heard they are pretty efficient and for business solutions they have AMR/CNR modems that double as sound cards... true? this is just something i remember reading so i may be wrong... in any case, i have an AMR V.90 modem in an old machine that works well...
