What is the SAVE Act and why anyone who cares about voting rights should be against it

Based on the demographics of people that have the right paperwork (eg, a passport), and the apparent proclivities of low propensity voters to vote stupidly, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing for democracy in the long run to disenfranchise the lot of them with a stupid law.

But in all seriousness, yes, this is a bad bill. Just continuing the trend of Republicans trying to choose their voters to solidify power instead of changing their ideas to be broadly popular.

"SAVE"? Or just wants to transform to this...
- Sasistic slavers
- Against
- Voting
- Elections rights

A lot of the fears they are talking about in that article, specially where women are concerned, is already taking place when they try to get a REAL ID, that is going to be required to fly come May of this year. My mother attempted to get a REAL ID a couple years ago, but as she learned, she has to show proof/documentation/records of ever name change from birth (she's been married 3 times, and was adopted). She couldn't verify her name change from when she was a child due to not being able to track down the adoption papers from 70 to 75 years ago, She also had a hard time tracking down here old marriage license from her first marriage over 60 years ago when she married my father, as neither of them could remember which county they got married in. Because of this, she can't get a REAL ID. Fortunately, she was able to just renew her passport. Even though she had a passport, because she couldn't verify all of her name change, she still can't get a REAL ID. This is the stuff that is going to effect millions of women, naturalized citizens, and other minorities if they don't have every piece of documentation to prove the chain of name changes and/or path of citizenship. IF something like this goes into effect, it's very possible my mother may never be able to vote again, even though she is a natural born citizen and has a passport.

If she has a valid Passport she should be fine. A valid passport is a Real ID.

Trumps EO also accepts a passport as proof of citizenship.

Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

  • Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver's License
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
In coordination with its DHS counterparts, TSA has identified acceptable alternate identification for use in special circumstances at the checkpoint.

If only you people would ever try to make it easier for citizens to vote. God forbid. Imagine some little old 75 year old woman who voted her entire life now has to jump through these hoops? Why should she have to?

Notice how it is ok for Tulsi Gabbard to commit voter fraud. She get the voting privilege without consequence.

Crystal Mason a black woman in Texas gets prosecuted and sentenced to 5 years in prison for her vote which was a mistake.

But Trumpers claim we are all treated equally.

She could change her name back to her birth name, even temporarily? Thereby "erasing" all previous names in the chain?
don't think it works that way.. LOL! There would be no record of her existing for 75 years then, and would make matters worse I am sure. Besides, in Trump's world, she would probably be considered a spy or some shit.

I hope suffering and bad things happen to all of MAGA this year, all the politicians, all in the administration, and to all the MAGA voters and defenders.

Does it not?
They have two documents matching your birth cert name. That's the end of the check, "Real ID" would be granted, no?
OTOH, I know nothing of how difficult it is to change a name in the first place. Maybe she couldn't do that either at this point.

New Jim Crow, now including white women. Paul Wyrich(?)was the one who said he didn’t want everyone to be able to vote. Funny how he died of a disease that ate his spine. This is all Project 2025 stuff

Will current registered voters have to go through this? Might be a good thing, if half the MAGAs are unaware they are unregistered.

While the SAVE act will disenfranchise a ton of people, and it is evil, I am curious about the actual impact of Trump voters vs non-Trump voters. For women, who will be the most affected by this, I do think that passport carrying women definitely lean Democrat and that it could statistically hurt MAGA voters?

They know that repealing the 19th Amendment is virtually impossible, so do and end run to strip women of their right to vote.
Wonder what they are scheming to deny brown skinned people the right to vote
Then revert to only white landowners.

Seriously, did you even stop and think that idea thru? You do realize that the goverment verifies everything right, starting with your social security number/records? What do you think is going to happen when they find out you legally changed your name back from a different name, and didn't tell them, and tried to play it off as if your name never changed? Just verifying your social security number/records would show a major discrepency, and a list of name changes. You do realize there is a records trail of name changes just with your social security number alone, not to mention tax records, etc. If anyone did what you suggest, they would most likely end up in the middle of some serious criminal investigations, such as espinage or foreign assest/spy investigations, because there wouold be no records of her existing by that name for over 75 years.. Talk about suggesting an automatic red flag, with serious legal implications.

My wife changed her name when we got married. She never notified SSA. It was never a problem for the first thirty years we were married. Then the IRS and SSA started sharing data and free fillable forms refused to accept our returns because the names didn’t match. She had to go down to the SSA office and change her name.

Bureaucratic inefficiency is the last bastion of freedom.

I wasn't refering to not telling SSA about the name change, I was refering to when applying for the REAL ID, or in the case of the SAVE act, to vote, and his suggesting of my mom changing her name back to what her birth certificate said before she was adopted over 75 years ago. SSA most likely knew and had your wif'es name change recorded, long before they forced her to fix it, they just didn't require her to fix it until they "started caring" due to the increased amount of fraud that takes place when filing taxes and such.
