i can see 'fade to black', but 'one'?? are you serious?

Do you even know what One is about?

apparently not..

yeah, i do. it doesn't matter. it's not really that depressing. the music makes it even more not depressing. i'm not saying it's an uplifting song... i'm just saying it's not depressing.

The vast majority are just dark, not depressing.

Anyway, I couldn't go w/ Clapton's, as it ain't a rock song by a long shot.

My vote goes for The Gunner's Dream. When I saw the title of the thread, though, Fletcher Memorial Home is what came right to mind :)

Uncle Salty ain't too shabby for a sad song, either. Nor is Della Brown. Oh, and (Wish I Could) Hide Away, though it is less rock.

I was almost about hit the button to submit this, too, without bringing up Mr. Bungle. I feel terrible for that!

Ginger, Ginger...

Vanilla Ice - Too Cold (his Ice Ice Baby hard rock remake).

Doesn't get much sadder or more depressing than that.

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven.

The most depressing one that I can think of is Johnny Cash's version of "On the Evening Train" from the American V album, but that would not be considered "rock"

Do you possess any opinion that doesn't make you appear to be an utter and complete moron?

If you consider The Pretenders rock, then I'll Stand By You is up there.

And VH's I Can't Stop Lovin' You is top 3

Sad yes, depressing no.

The only sad part is how much they suck.

I'm going with Floyd on this one.

Definitely agree with Tears in Heaven. The janitor apparently left the window open and Clapton's kid crawled out. (The window was 2 feet off the floor.) A few weeks later Clapton received a letter at his home in England from his son who fell out of the window just weeks before. The letter said "I Love You Dad!" The kid sent it out days before falling out of the window. Possibly the saddest song of all time.

Agreed. It's Eric's heart pouring out over the worst tragedy that can happen to someone. He had just taken his son the to circus the night before too.

On the personal loss level, "Gold Teeth" by Man Man, or "Hurt" by NIN.

On the more grand scale or 'life is pointless macabre' a tossup between "How's it Gonna End" and "Dirt in the Ground" by Tom Waits.

None of these are technically rock songs, but that genre has been so blurred for so long, and couldn't think of any sad rock songs, as it is sort of contradictory.

I have to agree on Pearl Jam's version of Last Kiss, and Johnny Cash's version of Hurt

I know when I was a teen and depressed I'd listen to Blink-182 Adam's Song, and get more depressed which would actually make me feel better for some reason... It made me seriously think about doing something I'm glad I never did.
