Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
If you don't know, it's about meeting his son who was killed in a car accident (?) in heaven.

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You Into the Dark
I'm not a Death Cab listener, but I saw the music video for this on YouTube and god damn if it isn't the most depressing song with those illustrations.

Definitely agree with Tears in Heaven. The janitor apparently left the window open and Clapton's kid crawled out. (The window was 2 feet off the floor.) A few weeks later Clapton received a letter at his home in England from his son who fell out of the window just weeks before. The letter said "I Love You Dad!" The kid sent it out days before falling out of the window. Possibly the saddest song of all time.

Also Millencolin - The Ballad is pretty darn good.

For reference the original version was sung by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.
I think the Pearl Jam version of the song is sadder, but I prefer the original version.

Pearl Jam - Black, is sad as hell to me too.
Beatles - Let It Be

GnR - November Rain

November Rain, the song, is actually an optimistic song. It's about reconciling. However, the video is very macabre. The video is based on a short story where a rock star's fiance commits suicide.

Estranged on the other hand is a really sad song.

Lou Reed's album Berlin. Each and every song on this album, start to finish, owns every pathetic excuse for sadness listed in this thread so far.

I find it hard for "rock" to portray sad and depressing music. Too rhythmic for the most part (not always).

I'd have to say most of Joy Division makes me pretty damn sad.

That said, I find accoustic solos can convey sad and depressed feelings quite easily.

Not rock, but Sigur Ros is also really damn depressing.
