what is steam?

i'll be fine about this no more physical distribution media anymore as long as i don't have to run 10 tray programs to get the software i want.

you'd probably be best off searching the sites of the ISPs in your area.

anyway, i emailed optimumonline yesterday about their proposed 50mbps plan rollout, and i was told that it would be done between november 2005 and july 2006.
My age old question, W-T-F would you use that much speed for besides warezing on newsgroups?
Jesus, if you have been asking this question long enough to be an "age old question" why the hell don't you understand the answer?

First being, it's none of your business.
Assuming it's for illegal matters, is well, an assumption.
Servers need more bandwidth than what you'd expect. You think anandtech.com runs on DSL?
Streaming video.
Yeah I thought Anandtech was running on a 768k line.
So WTF are you saying? Tami isn't allowed to have a fast enough line to run a server w/o you accusing her of being a thief?

You don't have a point, so just drop it. You are either jealous, or ignorant.

WTF indeed. These things DO exist. See above. We are having this conversation on a server that DOES use this kind of bandwidth (if not much more).

i haven't been this excited about a technological innovation since cable-internet became widespread around 98-99. I'm dead serious too...streaming movies, streaming hd??, streaming music vids....I think with technology like this being impemented the internet could finally start to harness it's full potential, I firmly believe that right now we're only scratching the surface of waht it could become, limited by bandwidth as we are now.

I agree with that for sure. But Steam? I downloaded all my content in barely a couple hours on a 6 meg line, doesn't really seem to warrant a 15/30/50 line just for that.

I think it was quite obvious I was talking about typical home use and NOT running large websites with thousands of visitors. If that wasn't obvious to you then oh well. And there was no "accusing" of anything, I simply stated I didn't see much of a use for it besides that purpose TODAY. I will not argue there are things to come that will use it. And I stop arguing with people when they start putting words in my mouth, so good day.

There's a forum on broadbandreports.com dedicated to FiOS and they have some good insider info on availability.

Higher quality multimedia on demand.

Back on topic:

So is fios and optimum online the only two choices out there? Any others?

u r dum 🙁 what is better about the internet now that youve migrated from 28.8/56k to broadband? now take all those things and extend them to "ultra"broadband. stuff as simple as quick downloading of legitimate files is one of many benefits. as hard drives get bigger, and programs get bigger and more powerful, larger pipes make the whole process improve. just look at the size of nvidia or ati drivers or windows service packs and imagine you still had dial up. faster is always better. instant, real-time, on-demand is the new standard. the less waiting the better

Here's another forum that has discussion about FIOS.

Supposedly, some parts of NH are getting it, but I wasn't clear on where. I currently have Comcast Internet and Vonage for my phone service. If I consider Verizon for FIOS, I might have to consider them again for phone service. hmmm.

FiOS is in Riverside here, but I need it to move about 100 miles south. I'd drop RR in a heartbeat for FiOS.

Whether I need the speed or not, it's cheaper!
you don't need to wonder if it's ALREADY available... anyone wondering that can just go here.

Most of us are wondering when it will be coming if it's not already available...

Nope. And someone said it definitely is in Pittsburgh currently?

Just a comment that if you have a landline and get FiOS, your landline is converted to run over fiber. That means you're dependent on your battery backup for phone service in case of a power outage.

I haven't used a land line in years, so that doesn't really bother me to begin with. 🙂 (at home, that is)

from dslreports forums, you can request that they keep your phone line copper.

I asked my wife at lunch time about the next areas for roll out, she is trying to find out. Oh, and once you go FIOS, you cant go back to copper.

More like it's real obvious your make the claim people with lots of bandwidth are pirates.

And there was no "accusing" of anything, I simply stated I didn't see much of a use for it besides that purpose TODAY.

Your words not mine. But yeah, you didn't accuse anyone of anything...

You have been provided a LIST of things that can be done TODAY with that kind of bandwidth. I gave you a great example, and the main reason you can't run large servers in your home is... dum-da-da BANDWIDTH.

I will not argue there are things to come that will use it. And I stop arguing with people when they start putting words in my mouth, so good day.
Argue? I though you were just asking question... Good day to you too.

Bah I get all fired up, but I hate to walk away mad!

Yes there are lots of useful things. I just don't see them being implemented now or soon so it doesn't excite me. And I don't run a large server so again, no big deal. When I start seeing some streaming content, etc. come closer, then I'll be interested.

And I wasn't accusing her or anyone of pirating, I was simply asking, what in the world you'd use that bandwidth before besides that purpose. If you implied an accusation out of that, that's your doing.

Either way, let's be friends and uh, I dunno, nef in another thread now. I'm hungry...

websites, streaming stuff, database access remotely, remote access without lag... there are plenty of things.

Phoenix86: i don't think he was really pointing a finger at me as a thief; i think he was just trying to start a discussion, which is prefectly legitimate 🙂

You can request it, but they don't have to grant it.

Thank you, Tami. I'm glad you didn't think I was accusing you of anything.

So let's see here, websites...hmm. I suppose that depends on the content of the site. If sites will start integrating a LOT of streaming content all over the page, then yes. Otherwise, not sure if it's really needed for simple browsing. The other things you list, though, definitely. Remote access without lag...hmm...gaming on a thin client via remote access on my desktop at home? Sounds awesome.

I guess I just need to see some more implementations of high-bandwidth tasks, like pay-per-use streaming video and music, all games being online, etc.
