What is the purpose of RAID?

RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

It's a way to increase reliability of your disk storage. Each type of RAID has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

I have a friend who is going to build a server and wants to incorporate a tape drive for backup. Would you recomend using a raid configuration instead? if so which one?
