What is the purpose of life?

I was talking to a friend about religion and life, and it seems that a lot of religions say that the purpose of life is to get closer to god or be one with god, and the way to do that is to "follow these x steps"...just kinda seems weird to me if i think about it.

What is the purpose of life?
Well so far everything ive done in my life seems to be motivated by personal gain. Even when i do stuff like volenteer or help others, i do it because it makes ME feel good at the same time. So what is the purpose of life, it can't all be to get closer to god, nobody can be that purly dedicated!?!?

Yeah i can agree with that, and i guess happiness is what you make it. Such as if you belive following religion will take you to happiness, then go for it.

Actually I'll probably goto hel1 for posting this but what the hey.

If you like volunteering and it makes you feel good I think you are doing the right thing. But if you look down on people who don't volunteer or make your kids or someone else manadatory volunteer you are basically defeating the purpose of volunteering.

If you want you can volunteer to clean my room .

I wish you success in your pursuits, MichaelD. When you have attained your goals you will have "money", "power" and "control." I don't see "happiness" on your list, though.

Although many of the fat ass bucks here will disagree with me, money, prestige, power and control of others will not bring you happiness.

You can be happy and content without those things. You will not be happy because of those things.
