what is the point of 'double clutching'

Rallispec

Lifer
okay... probably a stupid question- but i may be getting a new car later this week, and it will be a manual transmission.. something i've only ever driven enough to learn how to do it without sucking.

i was watching "the fast and the furious" the other day, and Vin deisel makes fun of the other guy for "granny shifting instead of double clutching"... but from what i've always understood- double clutching was something you did in older cars when downshifting to slow the clutch down so that it wouldnt grind. So how would this help you in the quarter mile? and also, what is speed shifting?

thanks

😀Google😀

Double clutching is releasing the clutch pedal at neutral to get this thingy(I forgot what) rev matched before shifting into gear. It's not necessary on modern manual transmission with gear synchronizers built in.

yeah, thats what i thought,--- you would double clutch to slow down the revs on the clutch - when downshifting, never really used for upshifting though. So why would you double clutch while drag racing? or was this just another example of how this movie is wrong in every way.?

speed shifting is holding down on the gas pedal, pressing down on the clutch, put the car in gear, letting go of the clutch.. never letting your foot off the gas right?

how can you shift without using the clutch, i've heard people say you can do that.

I'm not sure, but doesn't look like it improves anything.
I read it here

Jerboy is right. Modern manual transmissions use synchronous gears, acctually metal plates with gear teeth, to synchronize the speeds of the various gears in the transmission so that there is no grinding of gears rotating at different speeds. In older manual transmissions, going back to the '50's and earlier, it was necessary to double clutch when you wanted to shift gear quickly. If you were just cruising down the street in no hurry there was no need.

There's ways and techniques to it. I'm not really sure how to do it and I wouldn't do it because it's not good for your transmission when you let it go GRUNCH!

I think you're supposed to shift the gear out and rev up the engine to appropriate speed for your current speed in next lower gear, then shift it in without using the clutch.

If you get it right, it will shift in just like that, but if the rev matching is inadqequate the transmission will greet you with GRHEHEGRUNCHGRR

You can shift without using the clutch, but it takes some practice and is bad on the tranny if you don't do it just right. NASCAR & other race cars have transmissions designed to be shifted this way, consumer cars don't and it will usually be slower than a fast shift with the clutch.

Whatcha getting? The Sentra can't be dead yet! It's a Nissan! 😉
>>

The Sentra is far from dead... its only a 2000 with 35k miles on it.. fairly new and in great shape--- But i have the opourtunity of a lifetime and i'm cashing in on it.

I am trading in my sentra for a brand new sentra se-r spec v!!!! 😀
i just realized i could do that, keep my monthly payments exactly the same, and get the car i've been dreaming about getting for the past 4 months. I talked to my parents about it and they're were cool with the idea and my dad is going to co-sign. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to finalize things and sign the paperwork, and i'll get the car on wednesday (if all goes well)

im pysched!!

Double clutching in a modern synchronised transmission is not necessary, but it can significantly increase the life of the synchronisers. Every time you double clutch, you put less stress on the synchros than when you don't double clutch.

Wow, i like the aggressive look of the SE-R, nice, coupled with 6-speed...its a screamer, but i know the HP figures are highly overrated...

yeah, i think it looks great- i'm getting it in the really sweet blue.. (like the one on the left)....

it only has 175hp, but thats a lot more than the 126 i have now-- and the 6speed makes it a blast to drive. For $17,000 i think its a great car, better than anything else in its price range.

it's not really 175hp. based on dynos and reverse calculations, that number looks to be 165-170hp.

oh yeah. try to test drive a 2003 eclipse gt. just for comparison's sake. i think that you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R V specs says the car you're getting weighs 2743lbs. That makes it about 3,000lbs with you in it giving 0.0583hp/lb or 0.096kw/kg. By the way, I believe watts/kg is more important than horsepower.

tuffguy-- were did you hear that? any links... its not real important, i still love the car and its a lot of fun to drive.. i hadnt heard that though... I know the regular se-r only has 165hp. 🙂 i like new cars.
