What is the performance hit of Win2k over Win98se?

Bobby Ribs - ain't seen you post for awhile... 😉

Remember that 2K is NT 5, which means it starts, runs, monitors, and logs services. So it has more to do than a 98SE would. But then you make up for that by giving it more RAM and processor speed to do its job. 🙂

I think the slower the machine the greater the hit. I would say about 10%-15. Also with each reboot, you lose about an extra 3 min. on win2k.

On a fast machine, you will barely notice any hit - 5% or less IMHO. And as for boot time...2K boots for me in about 30 seconds, so that's untrue for a modern system.

That has more to do with network settings than with W2K. Besides how often do you boot your W2K system???

Do yall know how to get my system to 30 sec bootup time? Does DDR ram speed up bootup? i got a 7200 rpm HD. duron 800mhz. 256 mb of ram.
But it takes a 1 min or alittle more to bootup from turning pc on to the win2k desktop with mouse arrow not being a hour glass as it is for a few seconds.
BTW i got no startup icons and about 16 to 18 services on bootup. But i am on a cable modem , DHCP for it , printer, etc
But my ram use on bootup is only 55 to 65 MB of ram. I know when i install a fresh install of win2k it only uses 39 to 45 MB of ram which makes win2k feel so nice , smooth and fast which i wish it would stay but it doesnt 🙁
Got a network card too

Thanks

I've heard boot time depends more on the motherboard. Identical systems with difference motherboards can have substantially different bootup times. My Athlon system takes about 60 with a couple programs loading at startup.

Dunbar man then why doesnt it make a difference in windows 98 or windows me ? And i got a abit kt7a raid mobo it should bootup fast with this mobo!

dum bootup time

Well... as Psycholic basically said - why boot? 😛

My 2K advanced server was up over 300 days until I accidently knocked the mobo while moving some cables around looking for what was rattling inside, and it locked up (I keep the case side off to keep the 2 Xeons cool). 😉

The biggest factor will be how good the drivers are for your hardware and what applications your running.
Depending on what your running and what hardware your using and the driver version Win2k can range from being far slower to far faster.

You can't state definitively that no matter what hardware your using, or software your running you will see X% of a performance hit.

Well isnt there a way to make my bootup faster! I know there got to be. And why would my bootup be so fast in win98 and not win2k ?
I dont get how people can get 30 sec bootup time from turning pc on to win2k desktop. There got to be some speical tweak or way. I just know it. Nothing impossible in the computer world 🙂

Please reply

Thanks

Yank out all your hardware.

It's a well known fact that SCSI devices and NIC's add to boot up time. What difference does an extra 45 seconds make??? Are you and you friends "drag racing" your computers through a boot-up???

Psychoholic no but i would like 30 sec bootup because it is as fast as win98 bootup and i dont like too slow of a bootup. 30 secs is what i want at least. I just like a fast bootup.
So yanking all my hardware out will tell me what is effecting my bootup speed?
And what if i take it all out and it still takes 1 min or alittle longer to bootup with my Network card out?

Dude, why does it matter? Are you going to loose that much if your comp takes 30 seconds longer to boot up?

HansXP i dont know i just like faster bootup lol. HansXP think its because you got DDR ram instead of your fast processor? Or because of your mobo?
I am wondering whats causing mine to be slower.
HansXP do you have a network card too or no ? That could be it.

imtim83 - if you go with XP, then it boots faster. 😉

I will confirm that SCSI devices WILL slow it down. I have a SCSI burner hanging off an Adaptec 2940UW card in my 2K AS, and that thing will do its own scan for devices attached to it before continuing the boot.

Do you have "fastboot" (basically skipping the mem check) enabled in your BIOS?

Poof yes fast boot enabled in bios. I dont want to go to windows xp ever. I think it has just as slow bootup if not slower. I even heard that from people. With all the pretty GUI and pretty login i know it must take that long to boot. Plus its the 2000 kenrel which will take long to boot MS cant do anything to change that. But i guess it just doesnt matter. I will one day figure out the way dont worry. I always do hehe. Even if it takes me a while. But I do like trying to figure out stuff till i do. I know there got to way i just dont know it yet. Just about anything is possible in the computer world.

Is there a performance hit?? I ahve both, and Win2k is faster in apps, faster on the network(internet), and faster to load. especially when you count all the times that Win98 fails to load or crashes.
