What is the penalty for underaged gambling in Vegas?

I'm under 21 by a few years. Several people have been telling me I could certainly get away with doing the slot machines. Now if they catch me, what are they going to do with me? Just ask me to stop doing it or to leave? Or would they probably arrest me?

I guess they could arrest you for tresspassing, take away all of your winnings, and maybe ban you. I know that at the casinos in southern MS they are *very* anal about it. You'd have to look 40 for them to not card you.

Do you have a baby face or could you pull off 21 otherwise? If you look about 21, they won't ID you I would guess. Maybe grow a little facial hair - a little stubble or something - and you could probably play anything you like. Though, I've never been to Las Vegas - I'm just basing this on an Indian Casino I've been to.

So long as you're not winning lots of money, they won't care. I was at a casino the other night (only have to be 18 - no alcohol served) and this guy at a blackjack table with me had a laminated, business card sized table which said what to do in various situations (if you have this hand and the dealer has this hand...hit/stay). He kept looking at it, he tried to be real covert about it - he'd hold it down in his lap or behind the arm that he had on the table - but it was painfully obvious what he was doing. At first I was waiting for the dealer or a pit boss to come over and kick his ass out, but then I realized why he was still there. He was losing.

:)

Just don't try to order any free drinks or stand around in little groups that give a security officer a reason to card a bunch of you and you should be fine. I've only seen people kicked out of the casino for being underage, no real penalty.

You cuold probably stick to the machines, but I have never seen or been carded at a table, pre-21 and post-21.

I would only play at tables where the stakes are a bit lower. If you somehow miraculously win a jackpot, they do ID checks because they need to report winnings over a certain amount to the IRS. Wouldn't you just kick yourself if you won $100,000+ and had to give it all back?!?

If they would take your winnings, could you tell them you're under 21 and get back your losings?

They'd tell you to get the hell out and not push your luck (although if you lost you wouldn't really be lucky per se).

Ok, that doesn't sound too bad. I already have the goatee. :) If I actually win something I'm going to try to figure out how to get the slip to my parents for collection.. Thanks for all the help.

Yes, they will give you the boot and confiscate your winnings. They won't care very much if you gamble and lose. So basically, if you go, you're guaranteed to lose. If you're losing you can stay, if you win you don't get the money. What's the point?

NO they go to Gaming control board not the Casino. If I catch you, your butt is going to jail. If you are around the machines, you get booted out. If you come back. LV Metro will be taking you off property the next time. Will you get caught, I doubt it. The service workers dont give a rats ass about your age.

Why do you have to be 21 to gamble in Vegas? Couldn't they just let 18 years play, but not drink? What is the reasoning behind this? I would have though that the casinos would be happy to take money from anyone of legal age who is willing to give it to them.

the casinos will watch you put money in the slots all day long. When you win big they will verify that you are underage and you will loose all your booty.

Now that's an effective deterrent to cheating....that scene still makes me shudder every time I watch it, almost as much as the part at the end. :D

An excerpt from Casinogaming.com-Anatomy of a Casino (found using Google):

First of all, you must be at least 21 years old to gamble in Las Vegas. Anyone underage caught gambling or loitering in a casino will be asked to leave and, more importantly, if he or she wins a jackpot the casino won't pay it! Be sure to have valid identification when gambling because casinos are carding players more frequently than ever before.

If I remember correctly, all the stories I've heard about underage gambling while living in Las Vegas was somebody winning a large amount of money on a slot or video poker machine (but not fully paid out by the machine) only to give it up because he/she was a few years short of 21.

You've actually hit on the key point there: the drinking age. Casinos aren't stupid; they know if you keep giving someone free drinks they're more likely to wind up gambling more than they should. Casinos are in the business of taking people's money, have been for years, and are very good at it. Everything about a casino is designed in one way or another to elicit more money from you. Keep that in mind when you gamble and you'll have a much better time.

As far as underage gambling in Vegas goes what people have been saying is for the most part true. If you gamble and don't win very big -- say you play the nickle slots or the quarter slots even -- you won't really get checked at all. As soon as you win big however you're going to get checked if you look underage. Actually, scratch that, if you act underage. It's all about confidence, but having said that most pit bosses are pretty keen on how to spot someone underage. You'd have to be one helluva con to pull it off.

Oh yes, if you make a big scene you'll get reported to Nevada Gambling Control (formerly Nevada Gaming Control) both to add insult to injury and to cover the casino's ass. If you keep pulling crap you can wind up getting blacklisted, meaning every casino on the strip -- and a few in other places -- will bar you from entering and/or playing.

On a final note, if you do go sometime when you're of age be sure to tip the girls when they bring you drinks. If you don't they're liable to put eyedrops in your drink, which if you didn't know gives you severe Montezuma's Revenge.

When I visited Vegas when I was 15, I managed to put a few coins in here and there in the slot machines, but inevitably someone would come and card me within a few minutes and ask me to leave.

Remember basically by playing while being under 21, you are giving away your money. When you go to cash your winnings, they will not only ID you but ask for SSN, etc if they think you are even close to 21.

Thanks for all the additional replies. Right now I'm at Kinko's in St. George, Utah. :) Damn is it hot out here.. Anyway, my parents are with me. So if I actually win anything when I'm in Vegas I'm going to try to get the payout receipt (that's how the machines do it, right?) to my parents so they can collect it. :D
