What is the next huge change that will hit the internet? What about the western world?

Two separate questions.

1. What will be the next big change in the internet? I would say that the last big change was the cultural adaptation of social networking online (MySpace, LinkedIn, etc.)

2. What will be the next big change in the western world. That is, in the way that the internet changed the world - changed business, changed personal relationships, changed sales.

I don't know, new technologies are being worked on all the time. In what order they'll be ready and if they are widely adopted are really up in the air.

Personally, I think high speed wireless internet and much more powerful and usable mobile devices will be the next step. Literally instant access to the internet at any point.

1. I think the next big thing would be city-wide WIFI. I know their doing it in some cities already (Philly) but I think it'll become mainstream and the norm within my lifetime.

Book? No, I wish. I don't have the mentally energy to do any writing. Corporate life sucks.

As far as the "real relationship building requires face time" - my husband and two of my best friends are from OT. We spent time building the relationships, but most of it was online. It's not really all that new of an idea - people did occasionally fall in love with pen pals back in the paper age.

Is it truly that difficult?

Personally if I were to converse with you and it got beyond 3 E-mails I am calling you. 10 minute converstation vs. 4 days of e-mail ping-pongs. I choose phone.

Blizzard uses it to distribute large patches. It's becoming more mainstream, imo.

If Billy Gates is right the next innovation will be making TV more interactive. An example he gave was getting to choose which sports you want to watch (and when you want to watch them) during the Olympics.

i agree.

i only use emails to keep up to date on things if i have to, never for extended conversations

Eh, I hate the phone. It's a lot more convenient to use email and IM, many of the times, particularly because you don't have to synch schedules to make arrangements or have a conversation.

Here's my feedback, and by no means please don't take offense to it....I gather you are probably in your mid/late 20s from your approach.

Relationship building is about face time, always has been, always will be - the connection/trust that can only be made with a look in the eye. Who do you pay attention to the most? Who do you respond to the most? People that text you or people that take the mere seconds to call you? I agree that the social networking aspect is extremely helpful and the Internet has empowered that. But like any garden a network must be fed otherwise it doesn't grow....you work in HR....you know this. What is a better food? A sprinkle of water via e-mail/IM or a "I choose to call you".

Move it up a level. Can you make a value sale strictly online? NO!

For serious though, I'd say faster wireless everywhere and better mobile devices. It seems the iPhone is moving things in that direction. Also, google's free wireless plans for entire cities is also getting things there as well.
