What is the next ECS K7S5A?

I haven't been paying much attention to what motherboards have come out lately. What is the new ECS K7S5A? What I mean by that is this: Is there a motherboard out now for AMD CPUs that is cheap, stable, good performance, and has onboard NIC, but is more updated than the K7S5A? The K7S5A was a great board and it was cheap... I'm just looking for the recent equivalent.

There is a new version of the K7S5A. The K7S5A PRO with USB 2.0. After all the revisions it's a more stable board.

If you are using DDR there are a lot more options as you know.

I think it's currently the FIC AU13. nForce 2's dual channel DDR400, support for all socket A processors, LAN, AGP 8x, and the MCP-T southbridge which provides the same six channel sound as a real SoundStorm solution (but without all the SoundStorm I/O equipment). All for $85 at newegg.

Yea, I was looking for one that had more of the new features like DDR and what FacelessNobody describes.

Btw, is that Nforce chipset very good? I have been kind of leary of it. Is there any others with different chipsets?

does anyone have any input on the k7s5a pro? I have the original (ver 1) and I love it...but I am looing to upgrade to an xp2400 or maybe more...and since I am a creature of habit, I would like to stick with what I know

LOL. Calling all fanboys! Just have a look at any review, like those found on anandtech.com (hint hint) and you'll see pretty plainly that the nForce2 chipset is the #1 AMD platform. Even newer chipsets, like the SiS746 and VIA KT400A can't beat it. If you want AMD, get nForce2.

My experience and the experience of others here is that the nForce2 boards are very good.

The FIC, EPOX (I think that FIC builds the Epox board so they are very similar, Epox may have better OC'ing options) and Soltek boards come in at $90+. You probably can't go wrong with either of them. I happen to like Soltek...others swear by Epox. My main computer is Asus A7n8x deluxe based but those are more money and have more bells and whistles. There is a non deluxe model for around $115.

The thing is that we might now be above your price range. There are plenty of decent VIA boards in the $75 range and there are some pure DDR capable SIS chipset based boards out there that are pretty good too but the nForce2 seems to rule the roost right now as far as AMD based chipsets are concerned.

Like I said, I haven't been paying attention to the motherboard market lately. 😛 Thanks, I'll take a look at some of those.

LOL. Agreed. Nforce2 is by far the best chipset for AMD right now. I'm an ATI man myself and I can admit to Nvidia being better in this case 🙂

My friend just bought the pro version and an xp 2200 cpu. I'll let you know how that goes for him.

There is an ECS L7S7A2 (SiS 746) mb available now from NewEgg for $66. but they are slow to make any real dent in the NVidia NForce2 movement, although they are inexpensive and very fast in some apps, I think the jury is still out on 'em.
There is also a SiS 746FX chipset, and on the horizon an SiS 748 (400Mhz support) just coming out, ........... I don't think they will upstage the NForce2 mb's anytime soon, ......... but (as usual) there will be some budget mb options available from ECS and some other familiar brand names as well .......... soon, we hope.

My friend is using the PRO in a little home gaming server of his and we've had no problems. Only times I've had problems on these boards are on anything less than revision 1.3.
