What is the name of this memory technique?

When having to remember a list of things, you use the first letters of each word in the list to form a memorable saying.

For example if I was trying to remember the four directions North, East, South, West, I'd remember "Never eat shredded wheat".

What is this technique called?

The colors represent the numbers 0 through 9, respectively, on electronics.
