$800 or so. Oakley x-metal juliets with prescription lenses. Insurance paid all of it, I have several pairs now that I get new lenses in from time to time. I was getting one pair a year under my former employers vision coverage until Oakley stopped making those frames.

Our tax dollars at work? By the way, if you didn't pay for them then technically you haven't spent $800 on sunglasses.

I think the most I ever paid was $50 to a guy who stole me a pair of original Oakley Eyeshades from Vitesse Bike shop on N. Prospect.

Ironically they were stolen from me a couple months later. I'm pretty sure the little white kid with the EAZY E license plates who lived across the street took them. I wore them once at their house after finger blasting his sister when their single dad was at work and he must have seen how cool they looked.

It was private insurance from my last employer, not sure how those are tax dollars at work. But you are right, my former employer paid for them in a way, I just ordered them. My two brand new snowmobiles and many guns that I have purchased with my GI bill BAH money could be considered that though. Going to school while working full time, yet receiving that sweet, sweet BAH money has provided me with a ton of new toys and firearms, tax free.

I am a government employee now and my insurance is almost as good, but I also get a nice pension and everything that makes up for it, which is also indeed tax dollar funded. Is that a problem too?

I think I paid about $20 for mine, not quite gas station ones but think I got them at a drug store. Good enough for me!

The probability of losing or sitting on sun glasses and breaking them is directly proportional to their price.

My sunglasses are prescription so they always cost a LOT. My current pair needed new lenses (Ray Ban frame) so I bit the bullet last year. Due to my prescription and going for high quality lenses but NOT getting progressive lenses, I paid over €400. Just for the lenses. I already had the frame.

Just ordered an Oakley Tincan with prescription lenses for ~640€. Oakley charges 410€ for the lenses alone...

Don't have corrective lenses, so around 300-350 for some Maui Jims. I really like glass lenses and heavy polarization. I wear sunglasses every single day, and my "daily wear" Mauis have lasted me about 8 years now? They show a little wear and I've had the nose guards replaced (for free) twice, but I take reasonable care of them.

I can imagine where this thread will go, though.

I have like 5 pairs of "nice" sun glasses that I cycle through now, but mainly just 2 of them as I have prescription in those 2 pairs. I keep 1 of the other pairs in my car as a backup in case I forget to grab a pair when I am going somewhere.

My wife works in optical so I get huge discounts on my frames. Even with that, the most expensive ones I have are the Maui Jim's that I have right now. The frame was like $80 (with her discount, usually like $240) but with Maui Jim, if you want prescription, you HAVE to go through them so she doesn't get a discount on that, and it was $200 for the prescription lenses. So $280 total is the most expensive I've spent on glasses, and again, that's with her discount.

My other prescription pair is a Tom Ford pair and I think total that was about $180 since she could get a discount on lenses for those because they can use their normal supplier for that.

The other 3 pairs that are non-prescription she got for me from her previous job. 1 was a free Revo pair a distributor gave her, one is Barton Perreira that was $250 with her discount, and one is Oliver People's that was $200 with her discount.

Before when I only had cheap glasses I used to lose them within like 2-3 weeks. Now though I've had pairs for years.

Um, ~$250 for a pair of prescription Raybans. It was a package deal where I got a "free" pair of sunglasses with my order. Paid almost $500 for both pairs. SOoo, I got raped.

I've only ever bought cheap ones for myself, although I did splurge & bought someone a set of $70 LED glasses for their birthday recently. They are actually amazing lol. Skip to halfway into the video:

I had a family member that worked for Oakley - and he was able to get me 70% off any of their glasses. All that shit is so marked up, it's like mattress companies.

That said, I farking loved my Oakley Juliet's. From what I understand they discontinued those, which means they are going all plastic shit apparently. If I'm paying a decent penny for a pair of sunglasses the last thing I want is cheap ass plastic for the frame.

~$300 Maui Jims. Bought 'em the day after I got married, going on four years now and I still have them. I've been through many cheap sunglasses before, but the Maui Jims are nice.

190 for some Ray Bans. Had them for a few years and then left them in a movie theater. So I went to Costco and got some $170 Maui Jims that they had for $90. Still have another pair of $160 Ray Bans too.

I have $10 pair of "smith and wesson" equalizer branded cheap sunglasses. They are sold as eye protection for shooting, but they make perfect sunglasses. They are comfortable, and durable. I ordered them in 2011 and keep em in my car for any time I drive when it's sunny. After 6 years, they are still in perfect shape. The hinges are good. Longest lasting sunglasses I've ever owned.

$100 on a pair of polorized Polos I got from a optical store going out of business. Have had them for 3 years and they're still fantastic.

Those cheap $3 clips that attach to your sunvisor is the main reason they've lasted so long- I wear them when driving and clip them up before I get out of the car.

Just FYI, keeping glasses in the car in the extreme heat, especially if they are prescription, can ruin the lenses.

I broke down and dropped $150 on some Oakleys for Father's Day. I like them, they fit better than the cheap $6 glasses I would always get. I've seen Maui Jim's mentioned a few times and a buddy really likes them, maybe I'll check them out sometime.

If people are willing to pay $100.00 then that's what they're worth even if they only cost $2.00 to make.

400 or so for prescription oakleys. paid maybe half that through my use-it-or-lose-it FSA and the other half via insurance.

About $70 but I just lost it in the rough waves about 10 minutes ago so I have to buy a new one. I won't pay more than $100 for one since it's so easy to lose or break it.

$350 on some oakleys, wore em for 3-4 years then left em at a park and lost em, now i buy cheap $10-20 ones and they are just as good as far as optical quality goes, and are even polarized. Cheap sunglasses have come a long way in the last 10-15 years.
