My roomie is a philosophy major and it's pretty useless too, although he'd tell you that engineers are akin to dentists (not doing anything new -- his analogy) and philosophy majors are doing 'real' stuff. I just

Apparenly this person has never heard the saying: scientists discover that which was always there, and engineers create that which never was...

yup, but Engineers work hand in hand with scientists, taking from what we know, and applying it to what we don't. As for the original question, I would have to say business, and not because business is not an important field, but more or less because you don't need a college degree to take part in it. Heck, most businesses (non-technical) prefer CS majors anyways.

I have a degree in Leisure Studies.
while COM is seen as one of the easier majors, it is hardly useless.. look at the mass media industry.

art / dance

You don't need to go to college for that, go to a special art/dance school!

Art history or whatever history is a different matter though. I can see those as legitimate.

Communications has to be up there. Everytime I watch college basketball or football, almost all athletes major in Communications. Now I'm not trying to make the general stereotype that all athletes are dumb but unfortunately, the majority of them are not the brightest people.

huh, no one said sociology yet

Sociology is actually fairly useful if you want a career in research, plus it's an interesting major.

I know a few full professors at Rutgers Business School who have a degree in sociology.

I kinda wish I double majored with Anthropology instead of picking it up as a minor. Management has to be the most useless major ever. You don't learn anything,I seriously would bave learnt more if I majored in engish, should have done econ instead.

Alot of you should get off your high horses. There is no 'useless' major. If there's anything any of you learned in college it's that what you learned in college isn't whats important, it's all about learning how to learn. Most of the details and facts you forget in a few months, but you learned new ways of thinking, incorporating ideas, and being able to research anything you don't know. You take these skills you learned into the working world. Everyone knows it's experience and networking that gets you jobs and not the title of your degree, and these are two thigns that college can also give you.

Oh nonsense, There are some studies that have no real thinking to them so you don't learn this wonderful new way of thinking, incorporating ideas, and being able to research. Communications comes to mind. Maybe you need to do some more of this research before forming an opinion. :)

You have first hand experience with studies in communications? Why don't you go talk to the Dean of Communications at Princeton (for an example) about how his program is useless and doesn't teach anything to his students. I personally was a sociology major (which some of you consider a 'useless' major). It taught me how to gather and evaluate data, forulate hypotheses, critically think, and write well formed papers like a mofo. It gave me an edge in being able to incorporate 'the big picture' of things, more so than my collegues in dental school. I get top scores over my classmates in courses with term papers and essay exams (which I attribute to my undergrad classes). On the DAT (the dental school MCAT equivalent) I scored in the top 1% on the reading comprehension portion. Do I beat out the microbio majors on the infectious disease or pathology exams? No but I didn't major in biological science. The only thing 'useless' in college is the people who just get through college paying big bucks and don't bother to try and learn anything. You learn to learn in college.

Ive heard TWO people say EE is a useless major?

Anyone else disagree here? Come on you can make bank w/ an EE degree...

it seems like half my friends are EE majors.

More and more people are taking EE/CE because they can make so much money. I would not say it is useless, but some of the people who take that major really shouldn't be takng it.
