When choosing what to put before the @whatever.com, should it be:

firstlast@
first.last@
f.last@
first.l@
flast@

I'm leaning towards the last one (first initial last name without period), but would like to do whatever is most common.

For personal or business?

business - first.last@domain.com

Business

I'm going to be assigning everyone emails at a non-profit that I volunteer at, and want it to be standardized for everyone.

My concerns with first.last is a lot of people have nick names such as Charles going by Charlie or Douglas by Doug. It seems like there might be less potential confusion with just a first initial.

If it's a small non-profit then why not firstnamelastinitial@domain.com

or firstname@domain.com

My preference would be: first.last@ or first.mi.last@. You definitely need periods between the names or portions of names.

Depends on the name. The norm around my workplace is flast@company.com. I have first.last@gmail and a flast@me that I use personally, neither of which I would fear using on any formal document.

I know some people who have a unique first or last name that is their email at work or outside of it. My first initial (an "A") works well with my last name as an email. Some people's don't.

+1 for first.last

How would you handle the OP's nickname problem?

Richard Harris might prefer use Dick Harris?

Huckleberry Robinson might prefer Huck Robinson?

I work for The Man. There are something like 70,000 of us working for The Man.

The Man has set up our email accounts as first.last@TheMan.com

In my case, someone already working for The Man had my name. Rather than firing him so I could take his email address, they set me up as first.m.last@TheMan.com
