What is the most popular FPS as of now??

No. It's definitely Modern Warfare 2. While I don't personally like it, it is by and far the most popular right now.

Counterstrike or Counterstrike Source. They still get tons more people every day than any other Single Player or Multiplayer title. I have no idea why. I guess the simplicity lends itself to easier fun.

Gametracker.com shows CS 1.6 is ranked #1, CSS is ranked #2, Call of Duty 4 (i dunno where MW2 is...) is #3, and BC2 is #4. I know I used to be able to find a list of population per game at any one time, but I can't find it anymore...

All pretty much in a dead heat with around 60,000 peak players a day. As far as other platforms go I have no clue.

COD : MW2, CSS and CS 1.6 seem to be about tied. Team fortress 2 is up there and BF:BC2 is popular but not nearly as the others.

Both lists will be kind of biased, since Steam stats will mostly only have Steam games, and ppl who play Steam games probably won't use Xfire, since Steam does the same thing.

Ohh man, I remember playin the demo for Quake, then I remember bein able to play online with the 28.8 modem over tcpip. It was so new and futuristic, didn't have to use KALI like in Duke3d to play over the internet.

With Quakeworld ... lag in quake became tolerable much of the time as long as there weren't too many LPB's to unbalance the game too much....

Nowadays most games are just new games in existing franchises.... meh...

I love the massive discrepancy between the most played games 50-60k to the 5th game 15-20k thats such a huge drop in numbers.

I have seen those CS numbers for years, and find them hard to believe. I don't often run in to people that are regular CS players. Most FPS players I run into are mainly into the BF or COD franchises.
Where are these CS players coming from? I'm not denying I've met or heard from CS players around here, but are the vast majority of CS players ones straddled with low-end PCs in poorer countries around the world?

Umm no it's still one of the best FPS's ever. Steam isn't in those poorer countries either.
