As in most players, probably still Counter Strike. As in flavor of the month, BF: Bad Company 2.
There's no question that the current top FPS is GLQuake.
You dont need Steam to play BFBC2 do you?
If not, then the stats dont tell the whole story for that game.
Ohh man, I remember playin the demo for Quake, then I remember bein able to play online with the 28.8 modem over tcpip. It was so new and futuristic, didn't have to use KALI like in Duke3d to play over the internet. With Thunderwalker CTF mod
crazy numbershttp://store.steampowered.com/stats/
This is just for steamed games, but it's still a pretty good reference as to what game is the most popular currently.

52,481 58,944 Counter-Strike
38,855 64,054 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
22,509 30,544 Alien Swarm
19,538 24,313 Team Fortress 2
16,059 20,911 Football Manager 2010

7,706 8,301 Garry's Mod
5,596 8,215 Empire: Total War
5,547 6,709 Condition Zero
I have seen those CS numbers for years, and find them hard to believe. I don't often run in to people that are regular CS players. Most FPS players I run into are mainly into the BF or COD franchises.
Where are these CS players coming from? I'm not denying I've met or heard from CS players around here, but are the vast majority of CS players ones straddled with low-end PCs in poorer countries around the world?
There's no question that the current top FPS is GLQuake.
