depends on monitor...some are 1600x1200 @ 60 hz, some are 1280x1024 @ 60hz...I solved the problem and bought a 22" for my 9800...so I can every game at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF at 85hz

like high said it is monitor specific. Check how high the resolution and hz go in 2D and you will probably be able to figure it out for gaming.

thing is I haven't got the monitor yet.

It is listed under the DELL DIMENSION 4600 2.6GHZ machine as 17" CRT monitor (16.0" v.i.s.) display.

Are the monitors that come with DELL good?

No, they are not all good. Some are, some are not. I haven't checked in awhile but they used to have a few different 17" models. Your max resolution and the quality will depend on what the exact model is. Heh, why get a 9800pro with a small monitor? :)

I have a 17" monitor which maxs out at 16x12.(nokia 447xpro)
A 17" monitor at 16x12 is like a 21" at 20x15. So it is understood that a 16x12 is not nessecary at 17".12x10 is just fine. And a 9800pro does offer many other things except resolutions I believe. Or a video card is just for resolutions?

You should run your monitor at optimal resolution and refresh rate, for best experience.

optimal reso on my monitor is to stinkin small... (1024 on 17") so what i do is i changed reso before gaming.. down to the 1024 and 85hz refrresh.... i do it via ati taskbar icon.. pretty quick and simple

Probably at like 60-65Hz too; hopefully it can at least do 85Hz+ at 1024x768. You can make up for the lower resolution then with FSAA, at least in most games. Some games don't work well with FSAA; the original Homeworld games don't work well with it - the text was almost unreadable with FSAA enabled.

Well mine gives 100Hz at 10x7 and 85Hz at 12x10.It only gives 60Hz at 16x12, but as I said it is useless to use 16x12 in a 17'' monitor. So find yourself a nice 17'' one if you don't care about dimensions and you'll be just fine.

actually the 9800pro doesn't really offer anything over the midrage ati cards asside from more speed to run at higher resolution with and you don't really need more than 1024x768 with a 17", even 800x600 looks pretty good when you crank the aa and af.

personaly, i would downgrade to a 9600pro and use the extra cash to spring for a nice 19" aperture grille monitor. dell sells a nice dimontron here. that monitor would be much nicer than whatever 17" dell is trying to pawn off on you and it will have a much longer useful lifespan than any videocard as well.

I don't seem to grasp the meaning of what you are saying.
As I said before it's just a matter of taste and how big screen you want to use when you play. And you correctly mentioned that even at 800x600 in a 17'' monitor with AA on you can be satisfied.
But when you want to play at 12x10 for ultimate experience on a 17'' especially with the forthcoming games like HL2 or Doom3 and many others, then you'll definately need the 9800pro to gain extra FPS,with candy on.
So it's totally mistaken to say that you don't need a 9800pro with a 17'' monitor.A high end gpu always gives you flexibility. ;)
Try playing Deus EX IW or Halo with a 9600pro and a 9800pro in a 17'' monitor and you'll understand what I'm saying.

lol, deus ex 2 and halo run pretty bad no matter what your setup is. but really my point was that a 9800pro and a standard dell monitor is a rather mismatched combo and a better visual experience could be had at the same price by switching up a few parts.

I need a card that will satisfy me for the next DX9 games. And yes I know about Halo and Deus Ex my friend.
I will play at 10x7 or 12x10 HL2 ,and it will look so much better than yours, when you'll be forced to play it at the same resolutions on a 19''. For the simple reason that is a smaller monitor!

but who is to say goot would not be perfectly satisfied with a 9600pro?

a smaller monitor doesn't overcome high dot pitch, poor color saturation, and lack of brightness you get with a low end monitor like the ones dell offers standard with most of their computers. sure if goot prefers a 17" for whatever reason he should get one; i was mearly offering one possablity of how to upgrade to a much nicer monitor while keeping the price of the system the about the same. as for me, i won't be forced to do any such thing as i have a nice 17" sitting right here i can use; however i think games tend to look even better on my 21". ;)

Yes there was a point in mentioning these games. That means that the best card you have the better you can play the game.Easy to understand. If you own 2 or more monitors, that's good for you. But others have only one and want the best solution out there, that satisfies their taste. Not everybody likes a bigger monitor, even if tthat is hard for you to understand.
My monitor is still one of the top ones at 17''. I have seen many 19'' and 21'' and believe it or not I am completely satisfied with mine.(Nokia 447xpro. I can only compare it in terms of characteristics with EIZO).
I do not disagree on getting one 19'' or 21'' monitor or try to convince him for the opposite, I just said that with a top class 17'' and a good card he will be more than ok.
Now if he needs to have a bigger monitor that's just fine with me.
With a 21'' monitor you need a high end card all the time, to play new games at high resolutions.
Because if you can't play sufficiently at 12x10 with a new game, imagine trying to play it with a 21'' monitor.
It's not hard to understand what I'm saying.Think it for a while. ;)
