I've been trying to find some reviews on Sigma's new 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

I've seen it online for around $330. Seems like a great walk around lens for the money. Very usable focal range.

The nifty fifty is a must. It's so cheap and light, it belongs in every camera bag. Or the Sigma 24-70 2.8. If you can afford it, get the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS.

I hope that you're planning on recommending 17-85 lens to go with that. With the 1.6 sensor crop, that 50mm would make a lousy all-purpose lens.

For a decent price?

The Canon EF 50mm f1.8 should be one lens all Canon SLR owners should have. About $80 USD I imagine ($110 CDN up here), great portrait lens. Note that there's no zoom range, so this is one for controlled conditions. Very good low light lens, though a plastic contruction.

A very many people choose the Tamron SP 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di instead of the kit lens. Click on the link for sample images - amazing lens. Must be around $250 - $300 USD? Again, good low light lens and solid construction.

that's what the sigma 30mm f/1.4 is for.

<--- prime lens whore

(the 14mm f/2.8L USM lens is fooking hot!)

what's the f stop range? 2.8 to what?

It's 2.8 throughtout the zoom range. I'd actually recommend the Tamron 17-50 instead of the 28-75, it's zoom range is more appropriate for crop cameras.

I like the 18-55 range of the kit lens, and the only options for a better replacement are the Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX (about $400) and the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (about $450). The Canon offerings in that focal range are very expensive. The 17-55 f/2.8 is $1200. No thanks.

I bought the Tamron because of reviews about the Sigma having poor quality control, seems you have a 50/50 chance of getting a good lens. There are other options in the 17-200 range from various manufacturers, but they aren't as fast, and I don't really trust lenses with huuuge focal ranges. Unless they are L grade glass, they have to be giving up something to get that kind of range. I dunno, haven't looked at that stuff very closely. But you asked about replacement for the kit lens.

I love my Tamron 17-50. :)

The Canon 17-85IS is a very good lens and should run about $450.

The kit lens retails at around $150.

There's no measurement to describe how many times better one lens is than another. The Tamron is a fast and sharper lens, with generally better colors. You have to personally compare the two of them if you want to know how much better one is over the other.

The zoom range of the kit lens is 18-55, while the tamron is 17-50.

Kit lens is $180 and is 18-55 but I think it's f/3.5-5.6 so the aperature is not in the same ball park really.

Wow, so do some web sites set up pictures of the same subject with different lenes so you can compare them?

If I could only have one lense for the rest of my life, it would be the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS. Except for the lack of f/2.8, it is a wonderful lens.

Instead of the kit lens I got the 50mm 1.8 and then picked up the Tamron 28-70 2.8

Indeed, I'm very pleased with mine.

I'm actually in the process of selling mine. It is a very good walkaround lens with an excellent range, but it lacks a bit of sharpness. I decided to sacrifice a bit of the zoom range in exchange for a sharper lens so I bought the Tamron.

But, the tameron doesn't have the IS, does it?

Nope, but it's an f/stop faster.

But it isn't as fast. I'd prefer to have a wider aperture over image stabilization any day. IS does nothing for you if you're trying to shoot a moving target.
