What is the largest hdd that Windows 98 will recognize?

shilala

Lifer
Long story short...
A kid got a new 200gb hdd.
Tries to install windows 98 and crashes.
The hdd now shows as 32gb hdd as it's formatting.

I assumed during the 98 install he formatted the drive in fat32 and the rest can't be seen by the new xp install.
I already have a strategy to fix the mess but I'll do it after the install.
Any input?

FAT32 has a 32GB partition limit i think, so you'd have to use multiple 32GB partitions. Although there may be a way round it.

That answers my question Lonyo, Thanks!!!
The xp install is saying the disk is damaged now.
It's a brand new Maxtor, so I'll see what I can do.
If nothing else I'll format it in my machine and see if it takes.

WinNT has more problems with FAT32 bigger than what Windows98 handles with aplomb. I have partitioned two 200 GB Hdd's, and been able to handle 120 GB logical drives with Win98. It's possible that it is only the "DOS partition" that the NT OS's cannot accept being over 32 GB's of FAT32, however.

:frown:

From personal experience Win98 can use a 120 GB FAT32 drive without any problems, though you need to use a manufacturer disk or partition utility to create partitions larger than 60(?) GB (fdisk limit, but it's not 32 GB).

W98 lacks 48bit LBA addressing so I'm not sure it can work with drives over 132 GB, but driver manufacturers might have hacks to allow this.

Also (again from personal use) Win2000 has no problem at all reading/writing 120 GB FAT32 drives, it just refuses to do the formatting for partitions larger than 32 GB.

it depends on the filesystem. fat file system sucks. with the limits on file names and sizes and slow speeds.
try fat32 or remove win98

also large hdd have a jumper setting that limits hdd size to 32 bg. check if you have enabled that. it could also be your bios. old bios's or old motherboards have isses with large hdd.s

Add a Ata controler card and tou can have whatever you want....

*It has nothing to do wilh win 98.....It is down to t what the motherboard capability...

A cheap ATA133 card may be required.

I second that ATA133 pci card idea. I had similar problems with a friends computer and win98 addressing a 250gb drive. Went down to a local computer parts place and picked up a pci ata133 card for about $20 and it worked like a champ.
