I've seen all these arguments over the last number of years about flag burning, especially as of late with the war and all. What I'm curious of is what is the general importance or purpose of a national flag? Or a flag at all for that matter. I know that they represent your state/city/country/county/etc but what other purpose do they have besides saying "yeah, you're in such and such country, or such and such city or state"??

This is something that you'd need to google or hit the library for.
History of flags or something.
If I remember correctly, flags were first flown in battle to distinguish armies.

I've always thought this should be our US flag.
