What is the highest end rig there is?

Someone posted a link to a Tyan dual opteron MoBo last night that about made me mess my pants. Now I want to sell all my stuff and build a system based on something just insane like that.

Not that I would ever be able to afford it, but what are the highest-end commercially available components available? Let's "build" a dream rig.

The Tyan board can take up to 16gb of memory.

I think that alone makes it better than the computer at your link.

On top of that, the SATA-X drive is, to me, pretty useless. The bottleneck in current hard drives isn't throughput. A 15k SCSI drive would whoop a SATA-X drive. An SSD would be even better, but they aren't commercially available.

relax dude, it was a joke... hence the 😉

I guess you haven't been here long enough to understand it. 🙂

Fair enough. And I haven't been around long enough for people to know my posting style. I wasn't "unsettled." And no, I didn't understand it. Now I wanna know...

Not commercially available my ass.

M-Systems 2.5" FFD Specifications

BitMicro's got ones with even higher specs, but all models faster than M-sys are 'upcoming' products if you look in the pdfs.

Badass.

I can't afford that, but it's good to know it's out there.

On a completely different topic, I see you have 15k Cheetahs. Do you think I would see a sizeable performance increase over a 7200rpm IDE drive if I were to RAID a couple of small 15k Cheetahs and install my OS, Office and Photoshop on them, while using IDE drives for storage?

Badass. OK, so forgive the newbie question, but could you RAID some fiber channel drives together? And the performance increase would be sizeable?

Well, I took a gamble then. If it works out, great. If not, I am only out $60. I just got 4 18gb Seagate 15k fiber channel drives for $60 total. This will be fun to learn about. I didn't know what fiber channel was an hour ago. Now it will be fun to see if I can get it to work. If not, I will put them up on eBay.

I can't seem to find the adapter or card that I would need to use these drives. *sigh*

Anyone have any idea? I have been searching for the better part of two hours here...

Ouch. So this was a bad idea. I need a $30 card, and then another $30 adapter for each of the 4 drives. Nasty.

Oh well. You live, you learn.
