What is the grossest thing imaginable that people eat?

Definitely insects... like somewhere in Africa they toast tarantulas and eat them right by the fire like a shishkabob.

I've had tripe (linked above) and while it's visually disgusting, it's not as bad as an insect with legs still attached that you can pull off. That's the same reason I don't eat seafood for the most part (I eat scallops, etc. though). I also eat "1000-year-old eggs" which, for those who don't know, are green and gooey on the inside and rubbery on the outside... it's an acquired taste... but again, if you're going to compare - it's nothing as nasty as eating something with legs still attached and you're feasting on its guts (lobster/crab/shrimp/snail) *shiver*.

My vote goes toward Balut. I was, I guess you could say, unlucky enough to try this Filipino delicacy. And let me tell you, you aren't missing anything. It's awful.

Warning!
This is a picture of a fully opened Balut. I took pictures of it just to show my brothers what it looked like up close. So, please, listen to the warning.

Balut

My inlaws eat tripe on a regular basis.

How's this for NASTY! It's the lining of a cow stomach

Tripe = fantastic

Go to your local Chinese dim-sum restaurant and then report back.

Anyone else like pig intestines? chicken claws? pigs feet? cow/pig tongue? 🙂

YUCK! They have to boil it to get out the crap...it smells like someone's heating up a dirty urinal, then you eat the stuff and it has a texture like tenticles from a raw squid. The honeycombed meat actually stuck to the roof of my mouth! GAG!!!!!

They eat a Mexican stew called menudo, and it tastes good, but texture is everything. Nasty stuff.
