What is the future of S775?

I know Socket-B/LGA1366 is here for the high end performance area but does S775 still have life in it?

Will it still be a viable platform for the foreseeable future as far as mainstream computing is concerned? How long a lifespan does it have left if you had to guess?

I'd just like to know since I got shafted when I went S754 right after S939 came out and there is absolutely path. I have a 3400+ and there is only 1 processor faster than that, no dual cores, no 90nm, etc.

I just recently went S775 (E5200) on my new build and though my processor is nice, i know it will be outdated in a couple years. Will there still be viable options in say 2 years(as in will they still make processors for it and will the processors be quicker than an oced E5200) or will it be like S754 in which as soon as S939 came out, S754 was completely thrown out?

You may see the EOL on socket 775 when LGA 1156 (Lynnfield) is released later this year. That's not to say Core 2's or Core 2 Quads won't have life in them for multiple applications for years to come.

The platform is dead already as there won't be any faster SKUs coming out for it. It will be a viable mid-range/value platform for the next year or so at least, though.

socket 775 mb is only as good as the next intel cpu rev then you need a new mb 😉. anycase it is pretty much going to be a dead platform as far as upgrades are concerned.

If it stays around for 1 more cpu revision, I think I'll be fine. Upgrade in 2 years to the best intel has to offer for S775 and oc it and it should last maybe another 18 months right?

Sigh, I wish sockets could be modular. Everything is easily interchangeable on the pc, given the correct drivers... except the motherboard.

i thought there was E8700 coming? LINK

i think my Q6600 will be able to hold me over for 2 more years. unless i break something, which might lead me to sell out my old parts and buy new

Ill be happy as long as my 3.4ghz q6600 holds fine for 2-3 years. the only thing i replace once every 1-2 yrs is the Vid Card, tho mostly every year.

S775 has already hit the end of its life, but luckily for you there are still viable upgrade options. The E5200 is a nice budget CPU but if you want to upgrade, you can always get a Core 2 Quad later. The Q9550/9650 will probably end up being the best S775 CPU, and it's a hell of a processor. 2.83-3.0 GHz, 12 MB L2, 45nm, quad cores. They're around $300 now but maybe prices will drop as Intel phases out S775, or maybe Intel will release newer, cheaper quads (which will still be an improvement over an E5200).

Don't worry too much about an upgrade path. S775 has been around for a long time, unlike S754, and there are enough people with S775 motherboards out there that Intel will continue to offer plenty of processors for them.

As long as Apple keeps having their iMacs under socket 775, we still have a future. System integrators love cheap stuff, and not even Lynefield will be "cheap" as a Pentium Dual Core + IGP mobo and deliver similar performance.

I'd say at least 2 more years.

Hey at least you can pick your motherboard. No one gets to pick his mother.

Yeah, you can still get freakin' Prescott Pentium 4's if you look around! The S775 quads will be around for awhile, I'm pretty sure.

Yep. I am so glad i upped my 939 rig with an X2 4200+ right before Newegg gave them the boot. Not that the 3500+ was slow, i just needed more power at that moment.

Now i could probably sell that 4200+ and get another Q8200 for my spare motherboard i have sitting here 😉

You have PM! Just kidding, but yeah, that socket 939 X2 is golden right now... So when you ARE ready to sell, give me a shout.. 😀

Wow, why are they selling for so much? Don't people realize that it's cheaper and faster to just buy a budget AM2 board and a cheap X2? What possible reason could you have for desperately wanting to hold onto an old S939 board?
