Uh, we don't need recordable DVD's for games. Although a DVD recordable standard at a reasonable price would help drive DVD-rom sales. With CD-ROM, games are saved on the hard drive, why would you want to save them on the DVD itself? I think DVD-ROM would be good for games. The biggest reason is that it eliminates having a ton of CD's for one game. The quality will also be better. But not much else. DVD is so popular in the movie industry because it is so much better than VHS....but DVD-ROM's aren't that much better than CD-ROM's...they just hold more data, basically. But I do think DVD-ROM should replace CD-ROM.

I dont know why everybody hates swtiching CD's. What is the big deal? Oh wow, every 10 hours of gameplay I have to switch a CD. Who gives a crap? Expecially with computer games becuase you dont even have to move to put in the other CD's!

I think with the rash of console games coming out for dreamcast, xbox, dolphin, etc -- game developers are probably writing code now for that platform.More and more systems are being built with dvd included and i don't think it is for watching movies from your monitor.I watch movies in my home theater rig on a tv screen so all the family enjoys it.

Piku ,the reason why is simple, I`m not getting the most out of my DVD drive, second it would be cheaper for the companies then making 4 or 5 cd`s ,third less wasteful & environmentally better. All the Gamers I know prefer to have just one DVD rom loaded, then to keep changing disc`s after all we are using them to play games or other software rather then waste time changing disc`s.

Spawn true but what about floppies, when we first had cdrom everything was on floppy then it change to cdrom now we have cdrom & virtually no floppy software,at least with DVD it`s backwards compatiable with cdrom so why is there no move to get DVD going in the computer software market.

mem - well I agree with you there. In fact that is the one reason why I _didn't_ get DVD drive - I'm not going to watch movies on my computer, and if im not going to watch movies then what WOULD I use it for? :)

acctually it probably wouldn't be cheaper, because pressing 5 cd's probably still costs half of what it does to press a DVD :p

Piku,
cost wise it`s the same, the only problem is having it all setup to produce DVD rather then cdrom.

Its easy to keep 1 DVD nice and scratch free than having 4 CD's getting dropped, scratched, mixed up, etc.

"but DVD-ROM's aren't that much better than CD-ROM's...they just hold more data, basically."

DVD-ROM's also offer higher speeds. becuase they are higher density. more room, + higher speeds equals a fair amount of superiority. I know that games have becomd somewhat restricted on the CD format already.. Baldures gate was released on DVD (so u didn't have to have 5 CDs!), and I wish other games would take advantage of it.

it would allow more songs to be put on the DVD at higher quality (cough Homeworld Cough) for example. It would allow for many more levels in one game. it allows game creators to stretch their legs even more..
