on your cpu it isnt worth it. i went from an ultra to a gf3 ti200 and noticed 0 difference (800 athlon). got it for a future upgrade :)
when i went from a gts to an ultra the difference was minimal, not worth 150+ bucks, but i got a great deal on the card.

Here's Anand's review of the GeForce3 Ti200 and a GeForce2 GTS/Pro:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1544&p=8

As you can see from Anand's review, the GeForce 3 Ti200 is a good deal faster than the GTS/Pro. You can get a Leadtek GeForce3 Ti200 for $175 shipped at newegg or a GeForce 2 GTS-V for $70 shipped at the same place.

So, is it really worth the extra $105 for the GeForce3 Ti200? Let's look at some of deciding factors in your purchase:

How long do you want this card for? If you'd like to upgrade to a new video card no earlier than 2 years from now, then go with the GeForce3 Ti200. My reasons for this is that 1) All GeF3's come with 64MB of onboard RAM, and as games progress, 64 MB of onboard RAM will be very necessary (btw, the GTS-V has only 32MB). 2) The GeForce3 Ti200 has better software support, and this includes Direct8.x and other features that will help you out when you want to play future games optimized for those features. 3) The GeF3's architecture is simply superior to the GeF2's, and so you might as well get this faster card so it'll last longer.

Good luck!

he already has a gts right?

i thought the question was "is it worth upgrading my gts to a ti200 on a celeron 800"

or is it "which is the better buy for my celeron 800, a gts or a gf3 ti 200"

confused

Oops, just noticed that. In that case, I would wait for bigger and better things davidos. Maybe when Nvidia releases their NV25 architecture next Spring. Otherwise, stick with your GTS until then.

Whopsa Bruno.

Thanks all. To clear up the confusion.

I am going to pair the Geforce 3 Ti200 with an Athlon XP 1600. I currently have a plain old 32mb Geforce 2 GTS. Will I notice much of an improvement in fps, etc. going from the GF2 to a 3Ti200 or should I just wait?

I'd put the money aside and wait till you upgrade your CPU anyway. Who knows, maybe you can get a reg. GeForce 3 for the same price by then. Your system seems to be well matched right now.

I have found out the hard way that this is not a real GTS but a stripped down slower version that is probably slower than even an MX-400. I was told the V is for value. :(

Wrong answer! Straying a little off-topic, but the GPU is indeed identical to the GTS, the ONLY difference is slightly slower RAM on the card. It is NOT stripped down and absolutely SLAYS the POS crippled MX400 in any measure of performance. In fact, you can flash the BIOS of the GTS-V cards with the GTS BIOS. I was able to O/C my GTS-V to higher clock and memory speeds than the standard GTS values, in effect giving me a "true" GTS for only $65. Don't know where you get your info, but it is most definitely not true!

Well, I sure hope there is a big difference in performance because I'm getting a Gainward ti 200 for xmas to replace my 32mb gts. I wasn't planning on upgrading at first but the ti200 seems like such a good deal since it's only ~$170 and you can OC like crazy and have a super fast card. You could always wait till the spring for prices to drop further or to get a "geforce4" but who wants to wait?? Hope that helps.
