If you suck at your job and you show no signs of improving, you are either put in a role you can succeed in or fired.

If you are average to good at your job and you do it every day, day in, and day out, you get to keep your job.

If you are good at your job and you take time (personal or on the clock) to better yourself, take on new tasks and responsibilities, or continue your professional education in an area that applies to your everyday work, you are given a raise and/or a promotion.

If you are on the board, it doesn't matter, you attend a meeting once a month in your busy golf schedule and collect more pay than I make five years. Go you.

no promotions really available, we get a raise with every additional state we get licensed.
we get evaluated every day by our clients. if they call in to bitch, we have to defend ourselves
it is cutthroat in that 1/2 of more of our income is commission based.

i have no idea. i asked last year about what it would take to get promoted. no one, including HR, had any kind of definitive answer. 😕

but i did get called into my manager's office a few weeks ago and was told that i was being promoted effective 4/1. so yay for me.

Yes, varies by level, but projected date gets set during mid year evaluations.
Evaluated on certain metrics and qualitative factors based on current and next level expectations.
No, it's objective. However, having strong relationships with more senior people involved in the evaluation process can only help.
